The only things Video Games had to offer were being "plug and play" and how being proprietary technology made them more protected against piracy.

Take all that out and Video Games are no longer interesting for most 3rd party developers. Where they will go if these "features" no longer pay off ?

To Android or to Steam.

not to mention how limiting "current gen" console hardware is when it comes to creative throughput. phones/tablets are useful for mobile, shortburst (and in the hands of the right developer, longer burst) titles and PC is ideal for hardcore games.

"Oh but a PC costs so much more than a console!"

A) It doesn't have to
B) You pay $40-60 for a game on Xbox/PS4. I pay $1-25 for most of the ones I get on steam, some of which being new releases/preorders. factor that in to the long term cost of the platform.

Honestly: I greatly enjoyed the plug and play nature of the older consoles, one of the things that I detest about online play is the need to constantly update a console.

Sometimes one just wants to turn the thing on, and play a game, no hassle.
