Weird. My cpu is reaching dangerously hot (70+ C) temps at loads no greater than 20%, yet just a few hours ago it never went above 50...

Anyway, if you're having such problems it's very likely that the heat sink/fan assemblies you installed while waiting on the watercooler pump RMA are not fit correctly to the CPU.
I remember telling you that Intel CPUs have a throttle feature which slows them down when they reach thermally critical temperatures. They will keep a high temperature, but it won't get past the limit set at the factory because any rise of temperature beyond that will cause core clock reduction. So I don't think you will ever see temps higher than 70C. What you will see is the computer being sluggish and general slowdowns.
Shut it down and check if the CPU heatsink is seated properly. Also check if the thermal compound is applied evenly.
