I've not been digging Mastodon's new stuff. I don't like the change in sound over their past few albums. Leviathan was a *** masterpiece.
I'm the opposite. I love their new stuff. Like you had mentioned, everything else just sounds like random cookie monster screams and stuff. I much prefer melodic vocals. I've been in love with Mastodon ever since Blood Mountain, which to me is their seminal album. Crack the Skye was awesome, The Hunter was impeccable and Once More 'Round the Sun is fantastic (from what I've heard - I don't own the album, yet).
I've always been an Amon Amarth fan. I've not been digging Mastodon's new stuff. I don't like the change in sound over their past few albums. Leviathan was a *** masterpiece.

I'm giving it a listen on Spotify right now. I've not given the whole album a shakedown yet, just what I've heard on Octane.
Opening track is more what I'm acustomted too with them, though. So that's nice.
I guess the thing for me about them is I'm a drummer myself, and their drummer is fantastic and had a style all his own their first few albums, but as they caught on the style got a bit more "straight-ahead", and it felt like I step back for them. To me.
Speaking of lyrics though, how bad has Killswitch been since Howard left? Ugh. They're not even as good as they were before Howard now...with the same guy they had before him!
I have tmj but chew gum and everything. My jaw just pops a lot. Also gets stuck open sometimes but rare. I dont know what I would do at school without my gum

I'm not a drummer myself (weak ankles, no semblance of tempo), but there is something magical about the way Brann slaps those skins. I'm seeing it from a vocalist/guitarist standpoint, and I guess it's just preference to hear melodic vocals. Don't get me wrong, I do like growls when they're used correctly (one of my favorite bands is Lamb of God), but I just prefer melodic.
Also, yeah. I loved Howard Jones. That guy had a set of pipes on him.

It's a whole package things. Bad vocalysts who just scream piss me off. And production mixes that make the vocals stand out awkwardly and, as stated, just turn all the music itself into "noise".
I actually listen to a lot of European symphonic/female-led metal when I'm in the mood for actually listening to lyrics though. Nightwish, Within Temptation, Delain, etc. Or I just go full-tilt out there and listen to stuff like Therion and Eluveitie.

Epica's new album is a masterpiece. She's got such a pretty voice!

I like some Epica, though I'm not "all-in" so to speak.
Which basically just means I'll occasionally pass over one of their songs on Pandora when I'm not in the mood, but I generally like their stuff. Amaranthe, The Birthday Massacre, Kamelot, Turisas, and others like them fall into that grouping.
It's been forever but I'm still sort of mourning Tarja's leaving Nightwish. Anette is very good, and I like their music with her, but Tarja is just great. The recent song she did with Within Temptation is marvellous; I just don't like her solo stuff as much.
Nightwish became bad when Tarja left...and I say this beyond the quality of the various singers, but because Thuomas basically lost his muse with her, music became mostly banal and uninteresting.

I don't think they're bad by any means. I certainly like a lot of what they've done with Anette. But it's not the same in any way. =\
I really enjoy symphonic and operatic metal, but there's so few good artist for it. Toss in them pianos, string/brass sections, and opera singers and I'm in love. Fleshgod Apocalypse certainly one of the better more hardcore artists for this.
Dance of death always been my favorite Iron Maiden song for that fact too.
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
