It's something that can potentially pull the attention of a boss away from you, while you're free to heal safely or attack from a distance.
It's no where the same thing.
You seem to consider summons and upgraded weapons/armor some kind of cheat though, from what you've said before. I really don't get it though, it's a part of the game and every boss was designed with that in mind so why not make use of it? Especially on your first playthrough, you can do all sorts of challenges after if you want.

No, I said that upgrading your weapons lower the difficulty of the game. If you max out a weapon, based on its base damage you'll have a much easier time than if you kept it at +5 or +10.
It's not a cheat, it's a dynamic setting to adjust the difficulty of the game.
NPC summons are put in for players who can't get past a certain point and need to summon to progress further in the game.
