Congress must…
Protect and strengthen SNAP by opposing any proposals to cap or reduce funding, restrict eligibility, reduce benefits, or make harmful structural changes.
Implement recommendations based on the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report on SNAP benefit adequacy to ensure that benefit levels are sufficient for households to purchase a nutritionally adequate diet.
Restore SNAP benefit cuts made by the 2010 child nutrition bill and scheduled to take place in November 2013.
Protect jobless adults without dependents who are seeking work from harsh time limits restricting them to only three months of benefits in any three year period.
Protect funding for SNAP nutrition education (SNAP-Ed), state performance bonuses and employment and training programs.
Take action to ensure that 600,000 current WIC participants will not be cut from the program in FY2013 if the sequester takes effect. Also, Congress should carefully monitor WIC data throughout the appropriations process to ensure that appropriated levels will fully meet anticipated needs.
