I've done all of the above for the past 6 years and it is absolutely thankless. This is me simply taking advantage of not being obligated and sending a passive message. Six years... Yeah, there's something wrong there. Has anyone in that time been moved from part-time to full-time who was less deserving of it?

Another thing Art. You said you were allocated 24 hours this week. Doesnt that mean if you go into work on your off time you get overtime? If that is true, go in for some extra monies!

Naw, only 3 things warrant overtime, and the store director is absolutely adamant about avoiding obligations of paying overtime.
1) >40 hours within one work week.
2) <10 hours of off time between shifts.
3) >5 workdays, regardless of shift length therein.
Oh and of course >8 hours of being on the clock for one shift. Of course, this is most easily avoided as it is the most noticeable and tends to come under fire the most. In fact many departments have to break the rules and work free-time by clocking out on time, and going back off the clock to finish up whatever needed to get done.

I'm sure there have, but I simply don't take much notice or put much attention into it. My seniority isn't terrible, but for me it's not much more than inferior job security.

But if you go into work you at least still get paid the normal rate for the time you are there right? again assuming you are paid hourly and not salary

That's right. I know I'm shooting myself in the foot here, but for having worked tirelessly without complaint for however many years and being rewarded with inconsistent hours, I'm using this one week as an excuse to procrastinate and be lazy without obligation. I'm sure with my vacation pay, tax return, and union refund (or something like that) on the horizon, I'll want to supplement those checks with as much dough as I can.

Well this can either be really good, or really bad.
I had originally signed my Amazon account for a free month of Amazon Prime, which the trial had ended on February 25th. It was set to where Amazon would automatically deduct $80 to continue my service for the next year, but due to circumstances of covering my room mate $200 for rent, my account was not able to fulfill that charge, and because I opted out, my account cannot be overdrawn, and thus charges that attempt to go through will simply be declined and my account will be A-OK. However, despite the charge being declined and nothing being withdrawn from my account, Amazon still thinks me as a prime member as if my payment had gone through, expiring February 25th of 2014 >.>
Probably should hang onto that $80 just in case Amazon decides they need to take what belongs to them lol.

pretty sure that's illegal.
By Artemicion 2013-03-06 18:39:26
Yeah, it is illegal, and against policy. However, it's a double edged blade. You can either get your *** chewed out and risk suspension/termination for excessive overtime, or you can go incognito and get the job done without pay beyond your shift.
One of which is easier to get away with, so you can see why some feel the need to do that to preserve their job status.
I suppose we could involve the union, but for most that would be more trouble than it is worth considering the repercussion and shitstorm that would ensue from that point on.

or you could do the right thing when they don't want to pay you overtime: don't work.
If the work doesn't get completed often enough then either a. they'll go out of business or b. they'll realize that they need more employees.
stop letting them abuse you

or they'll fire you and hire someone that can get the work done on time.
its probably up to the employee to talk to the managers to let them know the workload can't be completed on time. or at least give them a heads up that it the time to completion isn't feasible with whatever schedule they had planned for it.

Pretty sure the Union would be happy to sue them over that.

Considering how consistent of a problem this is across multiple departments and employees, it isn't a matter of employees being too slow or lazy, but rather facing unrealistic amounts of work within the bracket of a full shift. And really it isn't a surprise that they'd resort to finishing the job on free time, as involving the union, or having additional hires would only put a target on their head or reduce their hours.

Probably not unionized. Standing up to them is all well and good, but if he gets fired, what's he going to do while the wrongful dismissal case goes through the courts? What if it doesn't end up in his favour. ***ain't so black and white.

Yeah. Unions are a blessing and a curse. It's good having an organization with tangible power looking after your interests and rights, but at the same time it can work against you and your simple need to fulfill life's obligations to work.
Which reminds me, I should watch The Gangs of New York.

You seem to be missing the point that they want to keep their jobs. If they do as you say they could easily do what Volkom said and just fire you for someone who works more efficiently, or go out of business. Either way, you are out of a job. Honestly if i have to work an extra hour or two off the clock to keep my job then i would do just that. It isnt much different from those of us who work on a Salary. We don't get the benefit of overtime so we constantly lose time off to come in and do extra work.
Honestly, on the topic of unions, i think they cause more troubles than they are worth half the damn time. Sure they were useful back in the day and may at times be useful again, but more often than not they cause more problems than they are worth.

This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
