First off, it depends on the kind of kid you have. It all depends on their personality. (I have two boys btw) My 1st child got spanked on occasion and put in the corner, grounded with extra chores as he got older. My 2nd child is a very emotional one and I know if I spanked him, it would emotionally hurt him to the core, so he gets grounded. What is also vitally important is if your children respect you as a parent and if they don't, you need to figure out WHY before they get older. All I have to do to my kids is give them the option. Either you can do what I tell you or this is your consequence and give them "The Look" which scares the crap out of them,lol...and 98% of the time, the choose to do what I tell them to do. Both of my kids are well mannered, behaved and have strong morals. Know your kids before you decide what punishment is right for them because everyone is not the same.

Really? I guess you're just one more example of why beating children causes long-term psychological damage, including insensitivity towards violence.
I'm guessing that since you're one of those people that has difficulty with "your" and "you're", that you probably have a below average IQ, too.

This I love. When people don't like and disagree with things I say, they request links and sources. And then when such links and sources are produced, from reputable researchers from research institutions, the next rebuttal is "well, well, um ... you can make statistics show anything you want!!".

Yes, that's absolutely true. This research does not draw a bold straight line from Spanking/Beatings >> Low IQ and Sexually Deviant. In other words, not EVERY spanked child ends up with a low IQ and sexually deviant behaviors. However, it IS MORE LIKELY that such a child will develop those traits.
The research DOES draw a POSITIVE CORRELATION between the child's environment and that child's tendencies. If a child is raised in an environment where spanking is used, that child is MORE LIKELY to have a lower IQ score. AND, the MORE FREQUENT the spankings, the LOWER the IQ score goes!

While I respect your argument MUCH more than the guy saying that "it's irresponsible to not beat your kids", you're still mostly wrong.
While it's true that some children have "thicker skin" than others, you are STILL psychologically damaging your "tougher" child when you beat him. The fact alone that you seem to take some twisted sense of pride in how your kids are frightened by "your look" shows you're doing it wrong.

Children respect wisdom and love. Unfortunately, as you point out, children respect physical pain, too. However, if you have to use physical pain to earn respect, it's probably because you lack wisdom or can not or will not provide adequate love to the child to earn his/her respect that way.
The problem parents like yourself have is you don't realize that the negative psychological effects of your beatings are not always obvious or apparent, for years or even decades. It probably helps you to sleep at night thinking that you "needed" to beat your "tougher" child because that's his personality, but that's just a crutch, which serves to help you feel better, not the child.

If one beats his/her kids, s/he is causing them, and society, irreparable harm. It's fact, it's science, and it's common sense, too. If one is too insecure, too dumb, or too afraid to see this or admit it to oneself, then one is probably less than fit to be a parent. Sorry.

How do you know? guess what, you don't. For all you know that could have helped him rather than damaged. Maybe he was going to do something that would have gotten him sued, arrested, etc. but had it prevented by the spankings.
