A couple video game things that grind my gears.
Achievements/Trophies. Half of these so called "rewards" are *** to begin with. You get handed 10-20 per game for just playing and beating the game. This is basically the same mentality of giving trophies away to all the kids' teams in a peewee league. What's to be rewarded? You beat a boss... Here's a trophy! Oh you beat another boss! Another trophy! Oh you found the not so secret, hidden in plain sight amazing thing. Trophy his ***!
I always believed that the point of the system was to reward you for going beyond the normal boundaries of a game. Do something different than what is presented. Some games have got it right but a good majority just hand them out like candy and people get the idea that they're awesome.
Differing degrees of difficulty for games. I remember back in the day when games were actually HARD. You got a handful of lives and MAYBE a continue or two and that was it. And you had to beat the game in one sitting. Obviously as the games changed, so did the mechanics but I feel the mechanics behind the difficulty haven't quite caught up with most games. Easy mode is a joke (obviously) but Normal and Hard and even beyond are just as easy as their predecessor. I'm sure we can all stop and think about a few games where we just blew right through them without much thought or effort on hard/er modes and stop and think to ourselves, "Wait... that was supposed to be Hard?"
