If you've ever registered to comment at any of the following sites:

Gawker.com
Gizmodo
Kotaku
Jalopnik
Lifehacker
Deadspin
Jezebel
io9
Fleshbot
Gawker.tv
Cityfile
Valleywag

...then your username and password were stolen tonight.

I suggest changing your account info ASAP, as those responsible reportedly intend to repost all the account info publicly.

I dont see how this would be a problem if sites like this salted and encrypted passwords. Only if they kept them plain text would it be really bad... I didn't see anything about that, though. Either way, don't taunt 4chan.

Lifehacker said the passwords were encrypted. The hacker could find out which hash function was used and the salt (if any) by brute force guessing (on their own hashed password), or if they had access to the code. It would be simple to build a rainbow table to crack the weaker passwords stored. This is why it's recommended to use a strong password.

I didn't actually get hacked but It's really put the spook in me so I've spent the best part of today changing all my passwords for every website I visit. Each website has a different pass now >.>

It's bad it takes a scare like that to actually make you realise how much a hacker who learns one password could access.

Roughly 2700 of the passwords they got were "password." I find that hilarious.

Equally hilarious were all the twitter spam postings that people who use the same login/password for everything wound up sending.
