Now don't get me wrong -- I went to catholic school growing up, and when this came out I thought this video was just about the sexiest thing that I'd ever seen. The song itself though was just too detached and overproduced.

I like this version way better... Trent's voice brings a lot more urgency to the song than the original, and the prominence of the bass makes it a bit more funky and catchy.

This is from a play-turned-movie called Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Really fun to watch and rock out to.

A bit quicker and heavier, but the real kicker -- Peter Steele was nearly 7' tall and a very manly man. Picture that guy enjoying this song enough to cover it.

OK OK... this one's hard to beat. It's a song that embodies a zeitgeist that had incredible effects on the sociopolitical landscape, not to mention the effect that it had on music and the industry.

a little edgier, a little darker:

Interestingly enough, this cover was initially done in a response to critics that called Bauhaus a David Bowie "soundalike" band even though their image and fanbase were a lot darker. LOVE IT!

David Bowie's version, off Reality:

I LOVE THIS! Takes the "we got stoned and drunk, jammed for 2 days straight and came up with this" vibe right out of it. It's melodic but still a departure for bowie. There are some interesting international guitar influences in it, which wouldn't normally lend itself to a song by a 70's garage band out of boston.
