I still would have used the word punctuation in his case but in a round about way his argument makes some sense. luckily we aren't phonetically speaking anything. I'm saying in terms of phonetics. He was most likely being called out on "your" which is a heterograph with the shared phonetic pronunciation with the word he should have written. There was also a lack of capitalization. I suppose grammar wasn't the right word for it, but in the end, my point came across regardless.

or were you just searching for the opportunity to throw out the most abstruse synonym for homophone you could google up on short notice
No it actually is the only very specific definition (that I know of) that differentiates the two types of homophones. In this case it was specifically words that sound the same but are spelled differently. A homophone can be a word spelled the same word with two meanings as well. A heterograph is always a word that has the same pronunciation with different spelling.
You're making it seem like I just looked up homophone in some thesaurus.

both work equally well
using arcane words for the sake of using arcane words when a simpler term is available is poor writing
at least that's what they told me in journalism school
but it's really cool how you can paraphrase wiki

Over 50% of the people on these forums wouldn't know what a homophone is so what exactly are you trying to accomplish here?
Please provide a more known, more simple term that describes two words that are spelled differently but share the same pronunciation.

you're(i don't see how it's possible) underestimating the average poster on this forum
last time i checked homophone is 5th grade, it may be earlier
my mommy is a 5th grade teacher and she teaches homophones right along similes, metaphors, onomatopoeias, and other longish words you learn in grade school
i'd love to continue but i got lolethics class
maybe when i get back

Does your ethics class cover botting?
Edit: Onomatopoeia every time I see ya
My senses tell me hubba
And I just can't disagree
I get a feeling in my heart that I can't describe
It's sort of lub, dub, lub, dub
A sound in my head that I can't describe
It's sort of zoom, zip, hiccup, drip
Ding, dong, crunch, crack, bark, meow, whinnie, quack Anybody else listen to this song in elementary school?

Still didn't provide a word.. but that's alright.
You're also giving too much credit to society. I never said people on these forums never learned what a homophone was I said they wouldn't know. I do think nearly everyone on the forums has made it past the 5th grade.
Have you ever watched are you smarter than a 5th grader? I wouldn't exactly call knowing the term homophone a requirement for a fully functioning adult in society. Many of the questions on that show that the children get correctly and the adult miss are useless information. Thank your mother for me for teaching completely impractical and useless information to children for years.
Also, I think I may kill myself if you try to mention you are in school or going to school or attend school or on your way to school in another post. You do realize you mention it in some form or fashion about every other post no matter the topic of discussion. Just letting you know that no one is passing out prizes here for you furthering your education. I can promise you no one gives a ***that you are in school or what type of school you are in or the classes you are taking. Leave that nonsense for your face book status that everyone will also not give a ***about but at least they will know who *** you are.

As for the *** test, it was kind of disappointing how many questions were geared towards the workplace.
I'd hate for my personality to be judged based so much around my job.
Granted, if I had a job I liked and it was really part of my life, then I could see it being true.

Yea I'm an *** for taking someones statement that they had to make in their defense and seeing how it could be plausible and trying to help the rest understand where that person could be coming from.
Or I'm an *** for responding to someone who tries to talk down to me for using the right word at the right time.
The "test" was based mostly on work, I enjoy my workplace. Had the test been centered on normal social life I would have scored similarly. Had the test been scored based on behavior on internet forums or in game FPS (I am hostile in FPS games but not in MMOs) behavior I would fail miserably. I suppose I'm susceptible to being trolled and have no problem becoming hostile with "internet idiots".
Giazz, this is just my observation from the few posts of his I have read over the course of a week. Was it really necessary for him to point out that he went to journalism school? He did so trying to discredit anyone who could possibly oppose his opinion on anything that comes to writing or grammar.
