right now i'm having this annoying problem:
my pc randomly shuts down w/o any warning and only while playing 14 (nothing happens when i play another game or just have the computer running and not doing anything, or surfing the web, etc)
i didnt see any reasons for a shutdown yet. no special places or after a set amount of time or w/e. to me it seems completely random

It's almost definitely an overheating problem. XIV is very resource intensive compared to normal PC use.
If your PC is not cooling itself effectively and the CPU reaches a certain temperature, failsafe mechanisms cut power and shut off the computer before damage can be done.

because as jaerik said: Lakshmi.Jaerik said: ...XIV is very resource intensive compared to normal PC use... theres a difference from running your pc full time and using all the resources of your pc full time
whats the specs of your pc?

a underpowered/dieing power supply will also do this. as it gets hot from running your system the overall output will drop causing hardware to heat up from under voltage. go install speed fan and it will give you the low down on all temps and voltages that your mobo has sensors for. im goin to guess that 550w psu just dont have what it takes to power that vid card for long periods of time.

I recently had this exact problem and it was simply my peak draw was to high for my UPS. Many people don't realize that their computer doesn't always pull the same amount of electricity in/out of their power supply. While I did know this, I forgot to consider what my battery backup could handle and toasted it.
Heat may be reducing the load your power supply can handle or you may simply be exceeding its peak capability when you run resource/graphic intensive apps like FF14. Or like Jaerik said, could simply be tripping a temp sensor.

Usually higher-end GPU cards will come with software to manage and analyse the temperature of the GPU as it runs. This software usually lets you control the fan settings as well as the memory settings on these cards, so if your card starts running hotter you can adjust the fan's (default) setting to compensate.
Assuming your card model comes with such software (provided by the manufacturer on their website if you don't have a disk still) and assuming it allows this functionality--and assuming you don't already use it--maybe you can check into that. It might be an easier alternative to planning out how to place a new cooling system into your machine.

Thanks for the tips guys!
The first thing i did now was to place the pc in another place so it can get air easier. it was placed between a wall and a desk so that the only way the coolers got some air was at the front or from above.
maybe that helps already but i'll look into what you guys told me when i have time (hopefully today)

it's one of a few things but more than likely it's either going to be a psu or heating problem or an odd combination of the two, when you turn it back on does it boot up right away or do you have to try a few times? you can also check your cpu heat sensor trip typically in your bios settings, it may have been set really low. Also yes it's a good idea to NOT put a pc in a small place, especially one that's packing that kind of power, it needs airflow to cool unless you're using liquid cooling, so you don't want it in a small location, or in a hot room.

If it is a heat issue, a short term solution is to crack the case open and point a small desk fan into the tower, no substitute for adequate cooling, but it'll work in a pinch, can also help you prove whether or not heat is the problem.

So i did not notice any change with repositioning my PC, but i did remove one side of the case which helped so far (used Core temp v 0.98 or w/e and the temp went from 88-90 degrees to 80-82).
However i'd still like to know how much i'll have to pay for water cooling, anyone got a rough idea?

you can get a kick *** cpu cooler for around $32 on newegg.com. theres really no reason to go with water cooling unless you have an insane pc or your just a hard core pc guy lol
edit: like this should do the trick quite nicely

i have to bring this thread up again.
for a while now i used CoreTemp to see the temperature of my cpu cores and i noticed that my pc shuts down at 100 degrees. most of the time my fans (one at the case, one at the cpu and one at my gc) start to work around 95 degrees and cool down everything to ~70 degrees, however sometimes they just dont start to work.
Is there any way i can force them to start? i saw an overhaet protection option in the coretemp program which lets me start a program. would be good if anyone knows a program or a command that lets my fans start doing their goddamn work

yeah celsius.
you know the cooling is fine imo, it just wont start cooling properly soon enough. WHEN it starts cooling it goes down to ~70 degrees, but sometimes that ***just wont start

lol no, it shouldn't go above 70... it should reach nowhere near where it's getting, regardless of cooling, you need to fix it

sounds like your fans are plugged into your motherboard if they're activating at a certain temperature.. a temporary fix could be to plug them directly into your power supply.. meaning the motherboard wont control when they turn on and off.. and you should get constant cooling.
Make sure you've cleaned out any dust from your case, it might help to buy some cpu cream (arctic ice or w/e) idk the technical term and clean the heatsink and cpu carefully, reapply the cream.. should help reduce temperatures and wont cost much.

you will have to leave one fan pluged into the cpufan plug other wise your system wont start up due to cpufan fail. go into bios and make sure you don't have cool and quiet turned on, or anything else that will change fan speeds. also i recommend using speed fan. it has an option to set all fans to 100% so should help out a bit

70°C isn't going to do any damage (100°C is way too much, though...), but if the reason it's so hot is because you only have one weak fan, that fan probably isn't going to last very long if you're running it at full speed all the time.

sorry for the double post, but its more of an update
i played around with this speedfan program a while and noticed that there are two things that are in danger of overheating:
Temp1, Chip: F71889F, BUS: ISA, Adress: $E80
Core, Chip: AMD K10, BUS: PCI, Adress: $0
as for the fans: one is sitting on the cpu connected to the motherboard, one on the gc and one on the case also connected to the motherboard. i wont change anything there cause i dont have any clue what i'm doing there.
the fan sitting on the cpu was full of dust, the other fans were ok. i think that the main problem after all is the cpu cooler, can i put another one on it? or another one? or all?
right now i'm having this annoying problem:
my pc randomly shuts down w/o any warning and only while playing 14 (nothing happens when i play another game or just have the computer running and not doing anything, or surfing the web, etc)
i didnt see any reasons for a shutdown yet. no special places or after a set amount of time or w/e. to me it seems completely random
