actually, the gtx280 should be substantially more powerful than a gt320.
But a 320 should still run it :P i want a macbook pro with your graphics card :P Im guessing if i spent the money on another laptop it i could get ffxiv running almost top?

Most laptops cant be easily upgraded, including macbooks. Usually the cases are made for specific parts. There are those laptops that have snap in parts, but usually they cost a ton of money for the new parts because manufacturers dont want you to buy them, they want you to buy a new PC if your going to upgrade.

Cough..PC means personal computer. This whole MAC - PC thing is a marking ploy started by apple to separate it's "culture" from IBM and Windows. Everything that isn't a server is a PC, be it running Mac, Windows, Unix. The difference between the two is the system architecture. Stop proliferating Steve Jobs's ego, he doesn't need your help.
I didn't know 14 could run in OSX....

It all depends on
A) What you are doing
B) what your personal preference is
if you want a laptop to both double in school work and gaming, you are probably better off getting a windows machine, unless you know all the fun OSX work arounds. (Most all games run on windows)
If you want a laptop specifically for school work, and you do alot of art or rendering or computational heavy stuff, hands down get a Mac. You get what you pay for, bottom line. You can run pretty much every educational software on a mac, and they have the best support team in the industry. You can get MS office, Maya, Adobe's full suit and the iSuite. that little thing is a powerhouse.
If you dont want to spend the money, or don't see its worth it, there are a ***ton of windows based machines. Now a days all the really shitty laptop makers have fallen away. Dell, Sony, Asus, Lenovo (IBM) all make quality products (i prefer Lenovo) so just find something in your price range. And for the love of god, dont buy from Bestbuy/Walmart/Circuit City UNLESS you can get a software package out of the deal (Sometimes you can haggle with them)
Also, don't listen to ANYONE who bashes and debases another hardware community. They are biased and usually have no clue what they are talking about.
EDIT - I totally forgot about Bootcamp. My apologies. Yes with bootcamp, you have the full functality of Mac and Windows in one. So really, no need to get a windows onry machine.
If you can afford it, get a Mac and try to get a deal to get 7 combo'd in.

Bootcamp != OSX and running 14 through a virtual machine must suck, unless its not as hardware dependent as everyone says.

you do realize bootcamp only partitions your hard disk it DOES NOT run like an emulator for windows 7?
all it does is divide the memory so you can install windows 7 on a separate space of your hard disk.
i could use bootcamp to have two partitions both running OSX.
edit edit:
windows 7 runs on an apple machine like it would on any other pc lol

My boyfriend has a Macbook Pro on which he runs Windows for FFXI, and we have both come to this conclusion:
A Mac, while having great parts inside, is not intended for heavy use like gaming for hours on end. It's like having a Ferrari that, in theory, has top of the line parts, but it was not intended to do much outside the garage, it overheats and stalls when driven outside. My boyfriend's Mac gets sooo hot on the Windows side, it's not even funny; I swear you could fry an egg on it. I think Mac's small size (more parts in close proximity to each other) and lack of fans and ventilation contributes to it.

Thats what "and" is seperating. Bootcamp isnt OSX, it boots into another OS AND trying to run 14 in a virtual machine would suck. That's what i was trying to say.

That's really odd, Mac's are usually little monsters, are you sure there wasn't other contributing factors? Also you are bound to find one bad apple, its hardware we talking here.

i just don't like how you're trying to cop off like you're some expert int the field with Phoenix.Darki said:

I started uni earlier this september doing "Computer games development" Bsc.
Our tutor pointed out the huge student discount we get on macs etc and said preferably you should buy a good laptop to do your work on. Obviously we arent expected to but for various reasons i am after a laptop and may as well make it relevant to my course.
The problem is i know nothing about Macs and dont know whether to spend alot of money on one or get something else probably cheaper with just as good specs. Bare in mind i get 15% (stated) off Macs (although ive heard i get alot more off).
So what would you guys suggest, i guess ill be using various software on it for my course and i recall my tutor saying it should have 4gb of ram and 20gb hardrive.
Is there anything im missing with macs? I can get all microsoft stuff on it if i like, such as office or msn with no problems? And what are the main plus points of macs?
Thanks in advance.
