the new mac trackpad is better than any cheap mouse you can get.

- 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256 MB

Asus G51JX-X1
- Intel Core i7 720QM(1.6GHz)

- 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
- NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
Price: $1,174.99
So for $725 less you get a better processor, same RAM, better HDD, and a MUCH better graphics card
And it's made from $0.50 worth of plastic with a horrible trackpad, a non-magsafe power connector, a garbage CD tray, and have you ever looked at the laptop?
If you want a MacBook with higher specs, you can buy a Macbook with higher specs.
Mac was never about being the most cost effective computer, it's about being comfortable. Which goes right back to the Rolls Royce argument. If you want to spend a lot for a comfortable car, you spend a lot for a comfortable car. If you want a cost effective car that works, you buy a cost effective car that works. If I had any other laptop it would have been out the window by now because asthetically and ergonomically it's god aweful by comparison. 40% of university students (at this university at least) use a Macbook pro, Why? Because a MacBook can do pretty much anything a PC can, and make you feel better doing it. If you're going to spend 8 solid hours on a computer, you want one that's comfortable, and that's what the MacBook is all about.
Of course, arguing comfort to someone who likely has never seen a Macbook in person is pointles. Go out and try one for a day and then speak. I worked for geek squad for two years, up until two months ago, I worked with plenty of macs doing repairs.
If you're spending 8 solid hours on a computer, which I do since I am a developer now, you do want something comfortable, which would be a mouse, no trackpad at all.
you're not getting any more comfort on a mac laptop than specifically that asus I mentioned, the asus has soft touch plastic which is extremely nice to rest your palms on, the trackpad is nothing special but its not uncomfortable.
So if a computer with crappier hardware besides the trackpad, and much more expensive, then be my guest buy the mac
I personally, having used plenty of computers, find no justifiable reason for the cost of a mac
idk wtf you talking about, have you looked at the new macbook trackpad? has nothing to do with being comfortable, more software wise.

If I had to use a trackpad for work, id shoot myself in the head, it doesnt matter how many features it has, I do 6-8 hours of work on a computer daily, I want the speed and comfort of a mouse

omg this is getting stupid 9 pages of trackpad that's all? ,anyone with computer knowledge will not spend a damn 2k$ for a trackpad with a shitty/outdated video card that does not even have hdmi port natively stfu, a mouse is better specially when your doing office work and 3d,gaming

A mouse is always better for everyone, as long as they have arms. If they don't have arms, they can stick with the pad.

I'm finding Kubuntu to be better for everything I need to do in college so far. I also find it prettier than a Mac.

Diabolos.Celestius said: All Apple does is makes you feel like you're a loser, a wanker, and a sheep unless you buy a Mac and then you become "different", trendy, artsy and part of the cool people on campus. All that shiny, smooth and elegant design is just a farce to trick the consumer-cultured zombie to buy their products that was made in China. Buying a mac does not make you "different"; in fact, you become even more of a sheep for breaking down your will to buy one for being fooled of the myth that mac is only for graphic design and art stuff.
I'm a graphic design major and I don't use mac, I use a dell netbook with ubuntu linux for college. I saved about $1000 on free software and adequate specs and I'm still passing my classes. To the OP: use your own judgment to decide what you need as I did for my choice which was based on my very limited source of money.
And no, I don't hate macs or Apple in general, I just hate their consumers.
errr what does their consumers have to do with this?

I started uni earlier this september doing "Computer games development" Bsc.
Our tutor pointed out the huge student discount we get on macs etc and said preferably you should buy a good laptop to do your work on. Obviously we arent expected to but for various reasons i am after a laptop and may as well make it relevant to my course.
The problem is i know nothing about Macs and dont know whether to spend alot of money on one or get something else probably cheaper with just as good specs. Bare in mind i get 15% (stated) off Macs (although ive heard i get alot more off).
So what would you guys suggest, i guess ill be using various software on it for my course and i recall my tutor saying it should have 4gb of ram and 20gb hardrive.
Is there anything im missing with macs? I can get all microsoft stuff on it if i like, such as office or msn with no problems? And what are the main plus points of macs?
Thanks in advance.
