After the help given here i am pretty tempted to go for a much cheaper Vaio if i ditch the ffxiv plan (over a macbook) since ill be saving like $500+
So you want a pc for school and to play?
Mac would be nice, and since you are in the U.K the prices are different ;/.
A regular pc laptop.... dell I would not recommend. That is pretty much it not out side the xps series. Alienware? you need to understand ones that run ff14 do not have to be "those types" of expensive ones, in matter of fact, I would wait on buying until some time next year, they probably will add the new ati radeon mobile cards in a mobile version.
For some reason the nvidia cards on laptop I have had bad situations with.

alienware laptops FTW. i have an alienware m9700 aurora 17 inch laptop i play on, and a m11x that i mule on. alienware computers are fairly competetivley priced, and can come with pretty much anything that you could ask for. check them out for sure.

$1.6k USD is a lot of money for a laptop (non-Mac anyway). You should be able to find what you're looking for at no more than the $1k USD mark.
What settings are you looking to play FFXIV on?

Nah, good UK websites are
http://www.ebuyer.com and http://www.scan.co.uk/
That's where I normally buy from when building or upgrading. Good prices.
You could also try Play if you know what you want.

For some reason the nvidia cards on laptop I have had bad situations with. Pretty sure the Vaio i mentioned a page or two back had an Ati Radeon (500 or something) grpahics card which i was thinking might be good for it till some guy said it wasnt! or at least the processor wasnt, but can choose to upgrade it on the site in customisation. Check a couple pages back.

Just remember if you did get a macbook(pro included) you may have to dish out money for Os software . Then realize how small the hdd you have is.
So get a regular laptop that is not apple. It even depends what new settings the macbooks have.
What are you looking into for the laptop besides ff14?

What are you looking into for the laptop besides ff14? Well im on a computer game development course, but i dont exactly know just yet what particular programs. One thing i do like about macs is the software they come with for sound and video editing etc.

I do not know what to say >_<. Mac would be good to help you, with all of that but it would need a lot of space, and it would cost an arm and a leg. So forget about it, just get a windows pc with the settings you want.

Could always get a Windows PC and load up a crack version of OSX.
>.>
<.<
That's essentially the same exact thing as dual booting with a Mac computer but it's cheaper.
You could always try out the Google OS but from what I can see it's just another deviation of Linux...but I guess most things are.

For that scan site, this looks better (of course costs more). The only thing is I'm not familiar with that series of video cards. I'll have to look it up (NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M). Pretty sure it's a good card.

Links like that are the reason i started this thread, that laptop does look very good especially for the price. What sort of settings do you think that would run ffxiv on?

The only one under £1k with a i7 processor ive seen so far. Apparently the Toshibas graphics card is slightly better however. Also the fact ive never heard of the brand name slightly puts me off.

Doing more research.

Alienware are expensive and are not for everybody...but i was simply saying alienware works for me. i also like the look everytime im going through security at an airport someone has to say something about my laptops when i pull em out. its just like cars what would you rather drive a malibu? or a caddy? i know i drive a caddy so theres that.

The GTS 250M shows as slightly ahead of the 5650 from what I'm looking at. That combined with the processor makes the MSI laptop look like the better option.
I really don't like the lack of options on those sites. Any others I can take a look at?

Doing more research. your too kind @.@
But yeh so long as people can back up makes then i dont really have a problem with it, i guess the big companies have got me with their brand loyalty schemes lol
Hmm ima check if any other computer manufacturers come under the list for discount on this NUS student card (crazy how many things there is, even like 5% off all amazon stuff).

This laptop actually came up as the second best option on newegg for the US (going by the criteria you've listed). I can't find the one that beat it on the UK sites.
I'm pretty sure you could at least play with a few options bumped up to high(est) with little to no lag. Not sure how Depth of Field and things like that would do.
Oh, and here's what Scan says about MSI on one of the laptop's pages"
Quote: MSI specialises in the design and manufacture of mainboards, VGA cards, OSD and barbone systems. Entering a challenging industry environment, MSI are now ranked within Taiwan's Top Three and the world's Top Five mainboard manufacturers.

Coming from a MAc owner, and PC owner - I will tell you this.
Depending on your college courses that you are taking/college you are at - you could get a student discount for Mac - not only for the OS - but a variety of programs through the apple site - and from most student stores.
Like me - I got windows 7 for my Mac for about $50, I got all of the software programs for editing audio and video that I needed, for about $75. You can split the HD space to what you need if you have a Mac, it gives you the option. So you could have all your editing on one side, and all your gaming on the other. Or all of it on one side if you so wished.
As for playing games on PC and Mac, I have no issue running Crisis or FFXIV on my Mac. WIthout any sacrificing. One thing I notice when I use my PC after using my Mac, pop-ups.
I started uni earlier this september doing "Computer games development" Bsc.
Our tutor pointed out the huge student discount we get on macs etc and said preferably you should buy a good laptop to do your work on. Obviously we arent expected to but for various reasons i am after a laptop and may as well make it relevant to my course.
The problem is i know nothing about Macs and dont know whether to spend alot of money on one or get something else probably cheaper with just as good specs. Bare in mind i get 15% (stated) off Macs (although ive heard i get alot more off).
So what would you guys suggest, i guess ill be using various software on it for my course and i recall my tutor saying it should have 4gb of ram and 20gb hardrive.
Is there anything im missing with macs? I can get all microsoft stuff on it if i like, such as office or msn with no problems? And what are the main plus points of macs?
Thanks in advance.
