minuss if you are going pc get an ASUS, their prices are very low for very powerful and good machines.
Rydiya got an asus that overheats all the time :/
Asus is nice, I do have to agree but I think establishing a price range would be more effective, I dunno if it was already mentioned in this thread or not what he was looking for. Only skimmed as it started going.
actually ***, this thread just turned into a PC vs Mac war for the most part and none of this was really covered lol.
I shall check Asus out.
Price range is <£1000 really (which wow comes to almost 1600 USD) but also im hoping i can get student discount on it, so i might be able to go above if so. generally i wanna spend like £800/900 after discount.
As for size, i dont want it too big probly 15" or so maybe even smaller if neccassery.
Edit: since i'll be taking it home on the train every couple of weeks and already taking a rucksack so probly cant put it onmy back
In all honesty I'd say it's best if you just do some googling, check like all the proprietary sites, I recommend as Darki had said Asus and also HP, you can check other sites such as newegg and any others mentioned if you want to do some quick comparisons.
The main problem is that i have no idea what is good in the laptops, like graphics cards. I know that 4gb+ of ram is good and thats about it lol. So i tend to get unstuck searching myself.

It's just my model that tends to overheat at times.
Looking at customising a Vaio on the website for £728 (including vat) which isss £1151.73 apparently (although i think its more expensive in the uk) i can get these specs (bare in mind thats $500 dollars under what my max would be)
Intel® CoreTM i3-370M, 2.40GHz (processor)
320 GB Serial ATA (7200 rpm) (harddrive)
4 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650 1GB (graphics card)
Is that good? Would that play ffxiv well? Bare in mind also processor, hard drive and ram COULD be upgraded on the site but would up price ofc, but if you think its worth it on any point- please say so
Vaio is feeling like a strong contender if those specs are good or good enough after upgrading to the next option up. If these specs beat macs then macs pretty much out the equation for me since i can play ff on it too for a good price.

I think that's overpriced a lot since it's euros, but I have no idea of the pricing there for hardware. It could probably run FF14, with graphics set at lowest and you would still lag, that's the best case scenario.
Pounds not euros. And hmm what needs upgrading in it to make it run well? The graphics card is very close to the recommended for "optimal" settings. Could upgrade to 6gb ram and the processer somewhat if that makes much difference?
Well that doesnt seem to exist on the uk market website.
Anyone know a familiar brand name pc laptop with i5 or better processor with a good graphics card for <£1000 (preferably uk website since i cant seem to find us ones for the same price at all)
Starting to wonder back to mac since pcs that can run ffxiv well really do seem THAT expensive, at least what i have seen.

Our tutor pointed out the huge student discount we get on macs etc and said preferably you should buy a good laptop to do your work on. Obviously we arent expected to but for various reasons i am after a laptop and may as well make it relevant to my course.
The problem is i know nothing about Macs and dont know whether to spend alot of money on one or get something else probably cheaper with just as good specs. Bare in mind i get 15% (stated) off Macs (although ive heard i get alot more off).
So what would you guys suggest, i guess ill be using various software on it for my course and i recall my tutor saying it should have 4gb of ram and 20gb hardrive.
Is there anything im missing with macs? I can get all microsoft stuff on it if i like, such as office or msn with no problems? And what are the main plus points of macs?
Thanks in advance.
Personal preference, I'd want both. Macs have bootcamp though.
If you build a pc, you probably will have a lot more fun. The reason is you can upgrade it when ever you want. If you buy a mac pc, you will have to buy windows os to use bootcamp.
I'd just build one if you want a computer to last you a while, and if you already have a cheap laptop, just keep it and use it for what ever.
This thread has been remained since it's back on topic. Keep it there, and assist the OP. Degrading the thread into a mac vs PCs war will cause you to be topicbanned.
Edit: That's not to say that you can't discuss the pros/cons of each. However, if you are just bickering, that is not helping the OP.
Also Stan, it needs to be a laptop for mobility purposes :/
hmmmm, how much are you willing to spend? Like I told you before, you can go with a mac book pro, or the regular series mac books, but will need a windows installation cd that has service pack 2 or something, or windows 7. If you do not mind spending money on windows 7 32 bit (do not know about 64 bit) go ahead.
Personally i would pick a normal pc if I were you. But Mac books can run FF14 if you have the right specs and I5-I7 core processors.
Only thing not to like about bootcamp is the space of the HDD, you may want to change the hard drive, or sent it somewhere to be changed. I would watch out and ask apple though since this might void the warranty. May as well ask them if they can do it, :D.

< £1000 (1600 usd) although all stuff found on american sites so far, i either cant find or is way more expensive here. A mac with those specs will be wayy too much since macbook pro are £1500 which have only a bad graphics cardan not an i7 processor i think
