Wow.. anyone who's ever played Use Map Settings type maps in WC3 or StarCraft knows that things can get pretty bazaar, but this is just wild.

To all you Final Fantasy fans:

EDIT: And damn it.. I spelled bizarre wrong. Shows you how much I play FFXI :(

Action RPG type mod:

If map linking(Blizzard promised we could link 5 maps together for a campaign-like experience) stores global variables, I'd expect to see some Chrono Trigger-like maps that allow you to travel between time(each map corresponds to a different era). Would be so hot...

I wouldn't worry too much. As of now, there aren't many modded maps out there. Since we're only a week or more into the release time, will probably take a while for maps like these to be fully released.

I honestly wouldn't have payed much for the game itself(multiplayer melee maps + campaign), but I'm sure the modding community will make it well worth my money.

I haven't bought SC2 yet, and it's getting harder and harder to resist... but these vids look almost too good to be true.

SC was an RTS game with no first person aspect in it. Have they changed it for campaign and put first person camera angels in for custom maps? And if so do you need a mod to make or play on these maps?

Can make maps like this with their Galaxy Editor that comes with the game, so no other special software is needed(programming experience helps though). The campaign itself uses the old school view of StarCraft that we all know to love, but custom maps bring a whole new world to the game.

Again, melee maps will retain the RTS aspect of the game.

Combine all this with free online play and you yourself have a recipe for fun.

I was a seasoned map maker back when I played SC. Made some diplomacy scenarios and RPGs. Will extensive experience with the old editors suffice? Are locations and triggers still basically the same? I assume altitude is going to be more elaborate than just on the ground/in the air... God now I'm missing the Death Soldiers III map... and MTG Magus before some newb ruined it by adding "legends" lol...

lol, yeah, those were some good times. As for map making, there is definitely a learning curve involved. Some things that were easy in StarCraft 1 mapmaking are more annoying in StarCraft 2. ie. Making a bunch of monsters and sending them to attack a certain person required like 2-3 things in StarCraft 1, but in StarCraft 2 you pretty much have to use a while-loop or for-loop.

Even without programming experience these things are quick to learn if you find enough snippets from other people, though. For practice, I'm finishing up a Zelda-ish RPG for it now. Next I think I'll play around with how cameras are set up.
