Alright, so I just had a nice conversation with sprint online support. I knew I wouldn't get much out of it, but I was curious what they would tell me. Here's a little snippet (about 1/5 of the actual convo).
Quote: Alex: Would you like help with anything else today?
You: Anyway, back to the phones. I see that the Evo uses Android 2.1. What version does Hero use?
Alex: Hero also has 2.1 version but this is 3G phone.
You: Is there a processing difference between the two?
Alex: EVO is 10 time faster then any other pda phone.
Alex: That's why you need to have $10 premium data pack for EVO.
You: Is that due to the 4G nature or because of the 1 GHz Snapdragon processor? What is the Hz of the Hero?
Alex: I would better suggest you to call to our technical care agents at 1-888-211-4727 to know about information on that.
You: ah, alright. I guess that's all I have for now. Well, other than is there an estimated time until there are more EVOs in stock online?
We are sorry, but the agent was disconnected and this chat will be closed
Thank you for chatting with us today!
I'm pretty sure Alex was tired of all my questions at that point and force DCd.
Anyway, so I want the opinions of others. Is the EVO worth it?
Keep in mind that most of the time I'm in an area that doesn't even get 3G coverage. That makes 4G irrelevant at least 60% of the time.
$79 vs $299 (I don't include the mail-in rebate since I usually never do them. Though, tbh, I probably would this time)

Alright, so how about the android OS in general compared to windows mobile 6? I know I get tired of IE hogging memory or being stupid. I get annoyed at the phone not wanting to connect to the internet without restarting.
I also have a problem with text messages filling up and causing the phone to semi-freeze for 5-30 minutes when messages are sent. Sure, deleting them helps that, but I don't like deleting messages.
What major and/or annoying bugs does Android have?

I don't have any complaints with my Samsung Moment (android).
Sure it still doesn't have as many apps as an iPhone, but it's getting there. It has all of the important ones. >.>;

It's strange getting coherent and helpful posts from KFH...
Edit: I'm reading through that link, but I did notice the date on it is 2008. Haseyo, would you mind confirming if any of the bugs/annoyances (like the not being able to name folders) are still there?

As far as the date goes, I'm sure the new-gen Androids got those problems fixed while creating new bugs

Well, a lot of those problems seem to be the HTC Hero itself. I don't have those issues since my phone does things differently, lol.
All the SMS stuff is handled in Handcent, an app that you MUST get if you have an android phone, lol. Makes texting so much more easier/cooler.
Whenever I hear about stuff not working for Android, it works on my Moment. =/

I was really impressed with the Hero and the Evo is leaps and bounds better than the Hero.
The only down side so far is the size of the phone..its giant but with a giant phones comes a giant screen (which to me is worth it.) I believe its the first phone with a 4+ inch screen, which is complete sex for a phone.
I wouldnt classify it as better..I dont think you can. The iPhone has just been out too long and has so many features other phones don't have along with the 150,000 apps..its hard to be "better" than that. But it comes very close from early reviews, and the fact that it's on Sprint is unusual. I don't think it will ever be better than the iPhone but I think its the closest thing we've seen so far. Evo just came out what last week and there are already 35,000 aps just waiting to be approved which is nice..plus the fact it's not on AT&T's service is also a nice bonus.(At&T blows where I live, I've had Sprint for years and have loved them.) Sprint data packages are also alot lower than most other providers and I never have to worry about my minutes becuase I get unlimited no matter what to any cell phone provider is pure win.
If anyone has an Evo yet..let us know how it is.

Ehh so not to bad..The whole Kick Stand thing is a little lame but oh well.
From all the early reports ppl are loving this phone and its a nice change for Sprint to have a contending phone.

Evo blows the current iPhones out of the water, although the iPhone 4 will arguably be a little bit better than an Evo spec-wise. (June 24th.) Then again, it's also $100 more. And well... it's Apple. And AT&T.
Between an Evo and a Hero though, I'd definitely go Evo. I have friends with it and it's a damn nice phone. I've heard about battery life problems but they seem isolated.

I'm edging towards the EVO. I normally only upgrade phones when they break (Mogul has a few hardware problems right now but I've had it for 2 years and 5 months now), so I think I'll have it long enough to justify the cost.

Hey Krizz, I just picked up an EVO on the launch day. I am coming from a G1 and my bro uses a Hero, so I have some experience with it.
EVO and the Hero are pretty much the same as far as software. Both are capable of running the latest android. (pretty sure)
EVO has a 8MP camera on the back and can record 720p at 25fps. EVO has a front camera which is good for recording yourself for video chats. I have used it with Fring/Skype support and it was pretty good. I did experience some feedback issues which was annoying. I could of tried turning down my speaker volume or plugging in a headset. For video calls, I recommend connecting to WiFi or a strong 4g signal, anything less might be choppy/laggy.
Sprint forces you into a $10/month data charge for 4G. 4G is very spotty at my house but the city I live at has good 4G coverage overall. Did a speed test and got up to 500kB/s.
While EVO does have a larger screen it doesn't have a higher resolution than the new Iphone4.
Kickstand, it has one, it's pretty cool. I use it for qik, fring, or just speaker phone calls.
It has a Micro HDMI port, I haven't tried it because I don't have a cable yet.
Battery life has been a complaint with some but it has worked fine for me so far. I've been using it moderately and only had to charge while I sleep. I do used advanced task killer app though.
The size isn't much bigger than the iphone but the screen can make it appear large. My wife has an EVO and loves it.
If you got a chance to get a subsidized upgrade, get the EVO. I am sure alot of Hero users wish they were due for an upgrade.
