The Democrats were the ones making a big deal out of the special elections, making them a referendum on Trump until after the election and going full reversal. You're just projecting at this point. The Republicans gave it a great try but Virginia, especially NoVA is hyper liberal. It's basically the east cost California. The two political centers are the Washington Metro area and Richmond, both heavily Democrat. The country side is fairly conservative though which is why you have so many conservative Representatives yet both Senate seats are solidly Democrat and the Governor is typically Democrat with the occasional Republican sitting for a term or two. Basically you have the same situation that California and New York do, wealthy liberal elites living in the cities run everything.

Oh no not Virginia ! I mean, it was already Democrat. The Democrats are so hungry for a victory they are celebrating keeping what they have. NJ is the more interesting one though that's also a super blue state with a history of Democrat governors. Chris Christie was kind of an odd ball that got elected on his exaggerated personality which set him apart from the politically correct Democrats he was competing with. He *** off enough in the last few years that it was practically guaranteed he would lose his spot.
