Malaysia Airlines Contest Fail

It’s been a catastrophic four months for Malaysia Airlines, which suffered the twin tragedies of losing everyone on board flights MH17 and MH370.

Now the airline appears to have launched a questionably named competition in a bid to rebrand.

The contest, launched on Monday, is called “My Ultimate Bucket List” -- which as Time points out, was not the best choice of words since a bucket list is made up of things one wants to do, see or accomplish before dying.

The competition is lauded by the airline as “a game of skill” and is only open to customers in Australia and New Zealand. As part of the entry submission, contestants must submit an answer of 500 words or less to the question: “What and where would you like to tick off on your bucket list, and explain why?” Prizes include a free iPad and a free economy-class ticket to a destination in Malaysia, to be determined by the airline.

On Tuesday, scores of news outlets and netizens lamented the airline’s unfortunately-named contest.

“Straight from the files of What Were You Thinking? comes a 'Bucket List'-themed contest from Malaysia Airlines that ranks as the second worst decision recently made by the beleaguered travel brand,” wrote MediaBistro's Claire Daniel, referring to the airline's recent decision to lay off 6,000 workers.

President Obama’s approval rating returned to his record low Thursday, following his admission last week that the White House “has no strategy” to deal with the growing threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

Just 38 percent of Americans approve of the job the president is doing, according to Gallup’s Daily Tracking Poll. His rating has declined steadily since December of last year, when the 50 percent of Americans approved of his work, and the newest number ties his all-time low.

His rating has not been this low since October of 2011, when unemployment was at 9. percent and he was struggling to pass his jobs bill. It was also 38 percent following the downgrade of the U.S. credit by Standard & Poor that August.

The president has not yet reached Jimmy Carter’s record low approval rating of 28 percent.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has permitted his country to cooperate with the United States in fighting Islamic State extremists in the region, The BBC Persian reported Friday.

Iran, a Shi'ite nations, views the Islamic State - an extremist Sunni organization that has taken control of areas in Syria and Iraq - as a serious threat.

According to the BBC report, Khamenei has authorized Iranian military officials to meet with leaders of the American army.

Sources also told the BBC Persian that Qassem Suleimani, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards' special Quds Force, was granted permission to combat Islamic State militants.

Further details of what the military co-operation between Tehran and Washington would entail were not reported.
