No more ps2 limitations? O.o
the ps2 limitations are hardcoded into the game. and lol this thread title is misleading, changing partion size is much different than changing hdd size

it's more like programming limitations, and for end purposes, not really.

Curious, how big are the PS2 HDDs? Iirc, they were pretty stretched with FFXI beforehand too.

40 GB and there's a lot of free space. I've got mine at 22/40 and that's with Resident Evil Outbreak data installed. So plenty of space since like no games (besides the Outbreak series that I can think of) used the HDD lol
22/40 free or 22/40 used? if its used its a problem, if its free it still might be a problem

well if we're going to nitpick it is possible to have logical drives larger than physical ones.

without compression, which is impractical for consistent use?

22/40 used (so 18gb free), but it's not like it's an issue to delete the install data off of Outbreak File 1 and 2. I ended up moving to a ps3 a while back though. Upgraded the hdd on the 60 to 120 so I don't think space is going to be an issue.

irrelevant on the discussion of a console, really...

and I still don't see how you can have a logical drive larger than your total physical drive size, regardless if it's one or multiple drives.

I'd like to see it though.

I wonder what they will do about the fact that FFXI is still being compiled with the SAME SDK (software development kit) they used in the original Japanese release of FFX back in 2001 ... lol

The only thing they upgraded was network drivers. :P

It works like that because RAID 0 is meant to share the workload through several drives at once. It's meant to give you performance, not space. Also because the files are split in chunks and then a chunk is sent to each drive of the array, it's called "stripe" RAID.

Very wonky design in the case of data corruption you can lose the whole partition. :)

After all it's purpose is performance, not security. If you want security for the data, you use RAID 1 (Mirror). :D

raid 0, the exact number of files you keep if one drive goes.

I'm aware of this, but it does this by taking multiple physical and making it into one logical. it's a side effect of the configuration, but a necessary one. in fact, with the growing popularity of ssds i think if raid sticks around it will become the primary purpose for raid 0 because raiding them for increased performance becomes pointless

not sure why you started commenting on data redundancy though. in any event raid 1 is still an inferior way of backing up, as it prevents loss of data on physical drive failure, but not file corruption.

the socom games used them, a few others too. there are more in japan that use the HDD some games had HDD support taken out in NA.

FFX used it too I think, at least the Japanese version did. You could install a chunk of the game to reduce loading times. Kingdom Hearts and Xenosaga too. Dirge of Cerberus was the most recent title that supported it.

Yeah I ended up hitting the wiki after posting. It's still a pretty small amount (outside of Japan anyway), and iirc you can upgrade the hdd if you've still got your utility disk laying around too. I think mine's still in the big *** box that ffxi came in lol (I'm such a packrat)

Nope, you can't as the PS2 will refuse any harddrive that is not "SONY" branded and specifically designed for use with the PS2.

Before anyone chymes in about how they use an 500GB HDD on their PS2, HACKED(modified copies of pirated games)and "pirateware" (HD Loader and similar) stuff obviously does not count on this statement.

SONY only ever sold 40GB HDDs worldwide for retail PS2s. That was a major gripe and is the reason why SONY kept stating that users could use any hard drive they wanted on the PS3 when it was due to release.

Quite the source for confusion, no ?

I take mild offense to the concept that an HD loader is "pirateware"...

some people just don't like to swap disks all the time...

Why ? I even helped the developers of "Open PS2 loader" myself. Still it does not change the fact that it's "pirateware" as the only and sole purpose it has is allow execution of games that have been stripped out of their protection be it physical or software.

Now, I have 3 GB free on my USA PS2 HDD... (the one with FFXI) I suppose I'll have to clean it up a bit ... haha

Just because some or most people use it to pirate doesn't mean all do.

Well I just have a hard time arguing for opensource software if it's only purpose is to pirate.

edit: basically saying I don't considering something pirateware just because it strips drm...

Ah I see. It's been a few years since I'd looked up the information. I guess I didn't remember correctly lol
