Anyone know how long it takes for a campaign npc to return from battle? Or additionally, if I can talk to Valaineral while he's in battle for the cs? (I assume not) Feels like I've been waiting here for a while but I might have missed him. Thanks :]

Don't wait, you have to go help him win the battle he's at. The mission gives you details about how to find out where his unit is. It will take a few minutes after that battle is over before he gets back to town, and sometimes he'll just go straight to another battle.
