Tofu Turkeys Get Thanksgiving Pardons From Seattle Mayor Ed Murray

/rolleyes

Quote:
SEATTLE (AP) — As Thanksgiving approaches, Tofurkys in Seattle can breathe easy, even if real turkeys can't.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray pardoned a soybean-based roast Friday, The Seattle Times reported this week (http://bit.ly/1HEA5Uu ).

Spokesman Jason Kelly says Murray posed with the tofu turkey at City Hall to draw attention to hunger in the community. It will be donated to Rainier Valley Food Bank.

Kelly acknowledged that Seattle's reputation in the rest of the country is "a little bit 'granola'" and that Murray was poking fun at himself.

Communications director Jeff Reading said Tuesday that the mayor has no plan to pardon any of Seattle's urban turkeys "either the literal or figurative variety."

The maker of Tofurky, Turtle Island Foods, is based in Hood River, Oregon, and produces several tofu or tempeh-based products.

Hey, I'm not normally in the "MURRICA!" crowd, but even I feel like tofurkey is an affront to all things American. It's not so much a manliness issue as much as...come on. Eat the *** turkey one day per year, you vegetarian twit.

Even my cousin's entire family (that is, her, husband, and her daughters), who vegetarian for doctor-mandated health reasons for a congenital heart condition, eat turkey on Thanksgiving, ham on Christmas and delicious greasy cheeseburgers on their birthdays.

That ***is delicious. Give in. Do it.

Since learning the arts of deep frying a turkey, my interest in the usually dry and unappetizing bird has increased 200%.

Frying > Baking every time.

Frying > Baking every time.

Fried turkey is quite tasty, though a well-roasted turkey is better than a poorly-fried turkey, in my opinion. My wife only cooks one day a year, and it's Thanksgiving, and she makes a very, very tasty bird.

She generally follows Alton Brown's guidance on the subject, brining it ahead of time, etc.

For once I have to agree, if fried right, it tastes like heaven.

Lovingly prepared roasted turkey will crush a fried turkey any time.

Also roasting is harder to catastrophically mess up in a way that results in property damage. >_>

People who burn down their places with a turkey usually:

Quote:
Don't measure out the oil needed to cover the bird ahead of time. Better to need to pour more than have to scoop out hot oil to prevent overflow.

Not patting down the bird of water which gives you that BOOM *** effect. Bonus points if it spatters so much of the oil it ignites your flame source.

Use a poor stand for an outdoor frier which then tips over, igniting your deck. Those cheap rigs have legs that beg to fall over.

Fry a bird that's too large that jams inside the pot or becomes difficult to pull out. 15 is usually the tops I do but I've seen people try up to a 20lb bird. Yeah, I'm not doing it.

Try to douse a grease fire with water. Oh gawwwwwwwwwd.

I live in an apartment and we've been able to safely fry for years. It really comes down to not being HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE and practicing basic safety protocol.
