For you and me, sure. A "simple" v0 Odyssey clear requires you to either be capped pre-Ody to clear with trusts (like I was when I returned), but then you will still need to get enough segments which can take a fair bit solo, or people willing to carry/merc you. SE doesn't design game content around mercing (in fact, they seem to try to discourage it), and there's a lot of casual players who don't use gearswap, are not mastered, have unglowed remas (if at all), play a few hours per week, and without merc/carry for them Odyssey is completely inaccessible.

All of that other stuff you mentioned is soloable easily, now more than ever, maybe not quickly, but you don't need help from anybody to complete it, just patience - you can do it playing a few hours per week with your friend/sibling/significant other that dragged you into the game he used to play a dozen years ago, and neither of you even has a linkshell equipped. The game has been for a very long time going into the direction of "you need a group to do the endgame event, but you can solo/lowman everything else with some patience", and they said it explicitly: we want +2 to be easy to get solo, but +3 to require a team effort. And the reward is very evidently commensurate to that.

I know that if I were a new player or an old returnee, I would not look at BGwiki and the progression toward Empy+2 and be like "wow, this sure seems fun and soloable" even if it's possible. On the surface it looks extremely daunting and overwhelming. If you're starting at near zero resources you have to jump through tons of hoops and do some serious grinding to get to the point where you have one piece—let alone a full set—of Empy+1 to even start reforging via Sortie. There aren't even any deeds of heroism KIs to skip the Empy+1 step.

Not to mention this is an MMO. It's not unreasonable to expect people to find friends or a linkshell they could simply ask for help with a quick 15 minute Gaol fight to jumpstart their endgame gear progression. Everyone gets 3 free Moglophones II when unlocking the content, so as long as the helper doesn't mess up you can get powerful gear for one set of jobs to help you farm all the other things you are missing. I know the Gaol system is far from ideal, but to act like it's a huge ask when there are such significant rewards for relatively little effort is just ridiculous. It's not the only catch-up system in place, so it isn't even all-or-nothing.

Nobody batted an eye during 75 cap days when people had to ask others for help with NMs or basic quests. These days it's apparently unfathomable to have to socialize when Trusts don't cut it.

If anybody is excited for Sortie release, just look back at recent history for reminders. Last few major content releases:

Dynamis-D - got like 2-4 fixes within a few months, just recently adjusted wave 1 clear conditions

Odyssey - Moogle Mastery bugged for months apparently; monsters with unusual detection methods. Segments largely ignored early on because it served no purpose at the time

Gaol - delayed several months due to bugs, insufferable amount of latency at launch which caused a lot of wasted points. Several glitches (camera lock, losing a phone if two people enter at same time). Doing 3 bosses literally made absolutely no sense at launch. Amplifiers, so you can lose and win.

Sortie - delayed due to bugs

SE has done a fabulous job with events. Get excited!

Being the devil's advocate here, and looking now, after studying some disciplines in university, it is not like they are doing wrong or bad in their job.

They are simply using documented software engineering techniques to their development:

- Releasing a product that supposely isnt complete isnt more than lean software development: they develop small release with each release being a viable product (Minimum Viable Product - MVP), even though not a complete product. Subsequent iterations will add more functionality till the product is said "complete".
https://www.productplan.com/glossary/minimum-viable-product/

- Releasing a product full of bugs: that is basically applying beta testing, using the users as the testers.
https://www.productplan.com/glossary/beta-test/

One can argue, though, that they arent being transparent, and they really dont care with users complains, as while those used techniques are teoretically correct, in a competitive market you wouldnt resort them like they do. But FFXI playerbase shouldnt be exactly a typical consumer: they can just take the offense and keep playing.

It won't be until after free campaign is over, but I would guess next version update at the earliest.

For content to be MVP, it has to be viable. It also has to exist. *gestures at Sortie*

There is a difference between a MVP and half-finished software. The MVP serves as the solid foundation upon which future features are added; half-finished software is a mess of half-features that doesn't form a coherent unit of production.

At any rate, the "MVP model" only really works if you design your software such that features can be merged additively. If your development model is latitudinal instead of longitudinal, (that is, if your design involves highly entangled, embedded processes), you run the risk of making production code that 50% works across the board. That is an awful design strategy, especially for an MMO.

Also--- having users beta-test a service while still forcing them to pay for it, *while also not informing them that they are participating in unstable content*, is a good way to terminate player trust towards the dev team.
