This honestly is meant in all fun, because I find it extremely freeing that nowadays its completely acceptable to discuss what meds you're on with people compared to just a generation ago where such things were "private".

Hell, let's just admit we need ***to make us normal so we don't go off the deep end!

I mean just imagine the Cele that would be around if it weren't for Oxycarbazepine and Levetiracetam?

ONE. SHAKY. DUDE.

Before you can strive to be normal, you have to define normal.

You would have better luck dividing by zero than defining normal.

my answer when first asked that question @kingnobody-

according to the almighty tv commercials, apparently normal is being 60 years old in dual bathtubs on a mountainside.

I don't think that striving to be normal should be a goal. Rather, I think that people should more freely accept people's struggles as normal because we are all *** up in so many ways.

Normal to me is static.

Static meaning everything being the same, all the time.

That will never occur. Life sucks like that, but things change all the time.

I mean, it's right in the word. "Normal" as in, "adhering to social norms".

Social norms have changed, especially within the last 15-20 years, and it's a much bigger tent than it used to be. Consider: if you see a cashier at the store with purple hair, does that shock you? In 1998, it would have been been really unusual, and now? Not so much. Things like anime and streaming games are practically mainstream.

So defining "normal" is really about asking the question "What does one have to do to be out-of-bounds these days?", and as much as some people like to claim they're "not normal", the fact of the matter is that most people are "normal", even the fruitbat denizens of this place.

I'm not personally taking anything, but I know enough people who those drugs have really helped, that I'm excited to see the stigma from it fall away.

my goodness folks, the use of the word "normal" in the title was sincerely meant as a play on the exact facts you're all pointing out- there is no normal any more, and THAT is what is now normal.

Use of that stuff was always heavily stigmatized by my family, so I never even considered it. I'm glad to see people getting the help they need though. The newfound prevalence helps redefine "normal," but I can't help thinking the prevalence is due to an increased need caused by current social and economic conditions. Individuals of all walks of life are under a ton of stress and are left to their own devices on figuring out the realm of mental health. I hope the ability to talk about those issues publicly leads to a deeper understanding of the subject.

I can honestly say I believe that we have moved from a world of "taking medicine to be normal" to one of "taking medicine to be one's best, whatever that may be" in just my lifetime, and that's a helluva social accomplishment.

I also think (and pretty sure better sources than I have said this long before I am) that as life becomes more comfortable, the lack of having to fight for one's basic survival gives people time to not only grow technologically, but also analyze one's flaws. If you've got to worry about where your next meal comes from or that village over the hill raping and pillaging yours, mental health definitely takes a back burner.

I agree completely, but one thing holding us back from progress in this is there are a lot of people who don't believe that mental health is a big deal. Things like depression/anxiety/adhd are regularly disputed by people who think they know. The more this is "normalized" the better our chances of being able to find better non-drug related solutions become.

I admire the fact that more people are reaching out now, instead of trying to tough it out or just sucking it up. It's a sign of strength that you wanna get better, and honestly pretty courageous to make an appointment, then show up to said appointment, then actually admit to a Dr that there's an issue.

As for me, just nicotine. But I was given an Rx for ativan or whatever the scientific word is I can't remember (Lorazepam? I think?) for at night time if/when the brain is like "Yo, now that's things are quiet, lemme show you something" Haven't actually used it, but knowing I have that little safety net is actually helpful.

not just mental health, but things like pain management (which is where my "what's it take to be normal" is primarily rooted in). sadly, I think at least some of it is due to advertising with commercials that would say "ask your doctor if Chemical X is right for you!" we can talk about these things because people saw them normalized on TV. though I doubt we are to the point where we wouldn't still poke fun at Bob Dole for hawking Viagra yet.

If the majority of people have to take meds to be "normal" then "normal" isn't exactly normal at all. It's just conformity

Sometimes, you got to learn to live with yourself because ain't nobody's sane enough to stick around you when you can't even handle the sober you.

Maybe you are weird. Maybe you feel you don't belong anywhere. Maybe you are awkward and can't seem to think you are normal at all. Guess what, maybe it doesn't matter!
