I read a story about some *** who hoarded up hand sanitizer, face masks, and various other products of the sort, these guys were renting u-hauls and traveling hundreds of miles clearing out entire inventories of this stuff. They managed to make a "decent profit" reselling on e-bay and amazon for absurd mark up, criminal in my opinion. The online retailers shut them down, now they are sitting on garages of the stuff w/ no way to sell it, meanwhile their local hospitals are short.

Predatory ***, too bad they didn't get shut down before they made their money back, and a profit.

While I agree they're *** *** it does always interest me to see how much people hate folks like that, but are totally fine being fleeced by corporations.

Most people aren't fine by being fleeced by anybody, you kinda have to put up with them in a sense though, up until the entire socio-economic structure of human beings takes a drastic turn.

Being trapped, and coping, does not mean being fine with things.

A corporation by law is required to make money and there are many risks associated with running any company so profits should be high. Not saying companies can't be "greedy" or immune from criticism but that's a little different than individuals knowingly creating shortages so they can make money off of a disaster.

You can freeze bread. I regret not having an additional chest freezer now. Definitely going to buy one before the next T virus outbreak.

Some bread yeah, not entire carts full lol. and I have family that does that normally but the bread after freezing sucks. It like chemically alters the starches or something, never cared enough to look it up.

freezing meat will burst the cell tissue which causes that altered taste, and i think loses some nutritional value but not much. unless you can flash freeze it (same reason why cryogenic freezing is un-viable at the moment). I am sure something similar happens to bread.

I am not a fan of thawed bread myself, but I think the point being is you can freeze it and store it, and later eat it if the alternative is starvation.

I operate a take-out only restaurant in California. They just announced a state wide mandatory stay-at-home for everyone except essential services like banks, groceries, pharmacies, gas stations and take out restaurants.

Businesses like us have been taking a huge hit since Monday. Today, customers just dried up with barely anyone out to buy stuff but they still buy from us to stock up their fridges.

Also, don't freeze dry or freeze bread. They taste awful. Nobody is going to shut down bread selling facilities. People would die from starvation.

Instead, look for frozen fruits, vegetables and meat. The 1st 2 things tend to come from somewhere far and may or may not make it to the grocery stores if things got bad and will most likely to be the 1st to go out because they loose a lot of nutrition in a week or so. Meat tend to have a much longer supply chain and may or may not be affected. You can buy a 40~60lb case and store them in a freezer. Should last for 2~3 months for 1 person.

For grains and such, I personally prefer chickpeas (dried) as they tend to bulk up a lot with water and contain a large amount of nutrients (in the short term). They are also tasty enough to replace meat in case you don't have a lot of meat.

Also, carry gloves with you or a cloth soaked in water+bleach (150ppm), if you don't have access to better sanitizer. Things like door handles and such don't get cleaned every time someone touches them.

Their hoard was confiscated and redistributed. Price gouging necessities during a national emergency is illegal.

I mean this is only the first week... this is just the very beginning here.

Semis can't unload because companies are apparently afraid to take the trailers and/or no workers to unload.

There's some curve left to go up before it starts to come down.

I don't envy you being in a big city during this, must suck, people here are pretty much going about their day, aside from all the school kids not being in school, and half the town "laid off" and major hoarding. like Eiryl said this is the first week of it hitting home though, so ***might get crazy town before its all said and done. I have heard of people getting robbed for their groceries already here though. surreal.

You don't really face masks or sanitizer or toilet paper.

I moved to using a water bidet to replace toilet paper.

Normal facemask don't really work unless you are already sick.

Bleach, rubbing alcohol and soap would work for most of your needs.

Personally, if I have to stay at home then it's time that I go on a diet and do a lot of push up. If I just eat a lot less for 2 weeks then I could loose like 10 lbs of fat.

I wont get the option to stay home until we start getting a ton of cases here. I spend my work days alone out in the mountains or in general far from other people while I collect water samples. In the mean time I pretty much stay home alone anyway, so as long as the internet holds and XI stays online I'll be ok.

the most exposure I get is the bus ride to and from work, only about 8 people ride it on my shifts.

And I can rob TP from work if I cant find any in town haha.

So, today was the first case of the virus being confirmed in my rural county.

This last week has been pretty insane to start. Most grocery stores have been emptied, toilet paper is non existent. Bars, hotels, and casinos have been shutdown as of yesterday, our town relies heavily on these sources of income. There are now rumors that our mine sites will soon be shutdown as well. I plan to withdraw a substantial amount of cash from the bank tomorrow morning, and hit every store I can get my hands on to get some groceries before the hoarding gets any worse.

I have heard of California being on total lockdown, as well of rumors of people even being imprisoned for attempting to leave the state.

Curious to hear how other parts of the country are getting along, surprised there isn't an official Corona-Virus thread here yet.

Crazy stuff.

New Zealand is doing pretty well so far, all things considered.

New Zealand has shut its borders to all but returning citizens and permanent residents. Said returnees must go into quarantine for 14 days (time frame for COVID symptoms to manifest). So far we've had 39 confirmed cases of COVID with only 1 moderately serious enough to warrant hospitalization. All cases of COVID have been confirmed to have come from overseas travel and there has not been a community outbreak as of yet. We've also started rolling out mass testing this week so I think we're on top of things.

Even if there is a localized outbreak New Zealand's geography will play to its advantage. Towns and cities are really spread out here so if one place has an outbreak they can lock it down for two weeks until things are contained, gradually building immunity in the process. We're also an island nation at the far end of the world, so crossing the border isn't really that easy to begin with.

I feel for others going through much worse overseas and I'm especially hurting for my friends and family back in the UK.

One thing is for absolutely certain, the world is going to be a very different place once the dust settles.

Got to go to Parump over the hump. Nye county....

The other day I learned that Nye County NV is larger than the nine smallest states. Kinda Crazy.

On topic, in central VA, all public schools are closed at least through next week, with most extending an additional 2 weeks, so that the kids would come back after Spring Break. Most restaurants are closed, or set up for take out only. Last night, Philip Morris announced they were suspending production at the Philip Morris Richmond plant for two weeks, after a second worker tested positive for Covid-19. This plant is the largest domestic manufacturer of cigarettes, making 146 billion cigarettes per year, as of 2010.

Cost of smokes gonna go up I'm thinking.

The thing I find most hilarious is what people are hoarding here. If this is the products people think are going to keep them alive, they deserve what could happen.

Bread completely sold out but flour, yeast, and oils completely stocked.
Can't buy toilet paper, but can pick up all the 12ga shells and 5.56 you could ask for.

It's like people have forgot entirely how to survive.

If problems start pilling like that, people will eventually notice covid is the lesser of the dangers around the world.

Im really worried if supermarkets just close, or have no restock. Here in our country we had some weeks of a truck driver strike. Things got basically out of hand with shortage of supplies. And that in a situations where the good were already readly available, just not delivered.

This virus should be closing every industry. Its not like they have goods ready to be delivery by the end of the day. So this can quickly turn city life near uninhabitable. Unless few people just decide to ignore government decree and work/ produce/sell stuffs.
