Somehow I doubt its a coincidence that since earlier in the week I got a windows update and since they ffxi has been suspect, lots of random restarts and freeze ups. Anyone else having these sorts of issues? (of course everything always appears to be working fine until suddenly it isn't) It almost seems like some sort of HDCP issue but I'm not entirely sure. Windows 10.0.18362

No one else has had any issues?

Generally 1 of 2 things happens:
I get a solid color screen and have to push the reset button on my pc (if I have music playing it pauses for a bit and then continues - but still can't do anything)

Option b, game crashes but mouse stays like mouse icon in game and it almost acts like the game is still there because I can't really click on any of the visible windows.

All that is painfully obvious to me pre-windows updates no issues, now this crap. I just downloaded latest nvidia drivers and dgvoodoo no help.

I use an AMD R9 Nano graphics card, along with AMD's Radeon Settings program and I noticed that in addition to Windows update installing things for windows ...it will also update apps it finds in the MS/Windows store.

I went to Windows 10 Control Panel > System > Settings and changed this from Yes to No.

This stopped my AMD Radeon Settings / program from getting automatically updated, which would also change/revert/update my graphics card settings, similar to the freezes/crashes/etc that you have been experiencing.

I'm sure that auto-updates to AMD Radeon Settings is great for modern games, but for FFXI, once I get it working, I stop updating graphics card settings/drivers.

Well I guess I can't roll back windows. As of now I've only noticed the issue when playing FFXI (windower/dgvoodoo)

1 of 2 things happens:
1. the screen turns into a solid color (if I have music playing it will continue to play but windows is inoperable)
2. the computer just restarts

I took my sound card out for a couple days and I think only #2 happened (but it was still happening) so I put it back in.

#1 just happened event viewer shows this:
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I uninstalled my graphics card and did a fresh driver install last night, no help. I upgraded to the latest dgvoodoo (and tried removing it) also no help.

A hardware failure is not impossible (graphics card is fairly new (1050 ti)), everything else is several years old, but I think that's unlikely in that it only happens when playing FFXI after windows update.

Well when I got rid of dgvoodoo its not bringing my system down at least and points to the d3d8.dll file instead:

That isn't strange also you should probably roll back your driver. If you didn't remove the d3d8.dll you didn't remove dgvoodoo.

Windows will update hardware drivers if they're available or what it thinks it should be on, turn that dumb ***off if you want a stable system. Also make sure you have system restore points, also you can look up exactly what it updated and see if a driver was in the list but as you went and toyed with it more your best bet is a manual downgrade at this point.

My last major Windows update didn't butcher FFXI, but it did disable my Radeon Adrenalin software for some stupid reason. Found out a few days later after looking up my graphics settings that I could no longer open the software, and I saw that FFXI was being forced to use my on-board video rather than my dedicated. Windows updates really like to *** with your ***.

edit: wtf necro? This popped up on recent topics?

Forced windows 10 updates are why I refuse to use it, even with a new computer I get them to install an older OS.

You can disable the forced windows updates through local GPO. Its shitty that its buried so deep instead of being an option on the native settings.

I am also experiencing issues with my game client stuttering when I interact with objects/NPC's when I am two-boxing. Occasionally it will go away with I quickly swap between my active clients but other times it will simply crash one or both of my characters. I thought it to be a windower issue but this only began to occur after I updated Windows last week during the monthly maintenance.

Based on the guidance above, sounds like I should attempt a roll-back maybe?

I'd suggest it, Emba. I had horrible stuttering for the past few days (intermittent drops from 30fps to < 1 every couple of minutes) and a roll-back has fixed it so far.

I ended up doing a roll-back yesterday evening and my problem has been resolved. Whatever changes that were made during the latest windows update seemed to be the source of my issues. Glad to hear a roll-back worked for you as well!
