I was actually wondering if Air Bending would ever get an "advanced form" as well. I have no idea what it would be though.
As far as the correlation between fire and lightning goes: Fire bending is supposed to be sort of a thing that comes from within; fire comes from our own souls, and is sort of like a life-energy. Lightning can be thought of in the same way (and unlike fire, this is actually pretty close to how things work in the real world). They talked about this in the episode where Zuko has to go re-learn fire bending by observing the dragons.
I also wanted to see Air bending get an advanced form, however, I can understand why it doesn't have one.
In the past 100 years there have been, what? 5 air benders total?
Metal was only recently created my Toph and blood by the woman Katara met. Fire had been perfected over time to arc lightning, and I feel like the fire nation was always more prone to a more fighting style than a supporting style.
lung bending? ha..air benders can suck all the O2 and various other gasses out of your body and you suffocate...or implode...or just maybe Meelos fartbending is the advanced form?
and didn't Aang Lightning bend? or redirect lightning at some point? either way Im sure they could but there hasn't been many avatars of late to practice the new forms of bending.
Well I think anybody skilled enough no matter what their native element should be able to redirect lightning but it seems like creating lightning itself is something that was limited to highly skilled firebenders although it seems a lot more common in the new series.
Then again considering the avatar is the master of all elements she/he probably doesn't have a need to learn metal bending.

Not everyone who can bend are able to use specialized bending techniques, so it stands to reason that the two avatar's we have witnessed are the same except they were lucky enough to be born as the Avatar. Take that away and they are a normal air bender or water bender. They are able to use specialied bending techniques though, but the ones people are looking for (Metalbending, Lightning Generation, etc) have not been demonstrated by Aang or Korra. Aang was able to redirect lightning as well as seismic sense, and Korra is able to use healing.
Waterbending
Bloodbending
Plantbending
Healing
Earthbending
Metalbending
Seismic sense
Sandbending
Firebending
Lightning generation
Lightning redirection
Combustion
Other techniques
Cloudbending
Lavabending
Mudbending
A skilled air or water bender is capable of manipulating steam and clouds; both Aang and Korra demonstrated this. I wouldn't really call it a type of bending though as they're just manipulating the water or the air around them. You probably won't see any Avatar attempt to use bloodbending, and they really have no need to plantbend either. Same can be said with sandbending as well.
Other forms though they have yet to demonstrate, and this is why I feel that the Avatar is basically a type of RDM basically. They are able to master all four disciplines yet they aren't able to use the most advanced forms of any art.
Energybending came before any Avatar was born or the four nations began, but Aang learned it when the Lion Turtle gave him the knowledge. As for Korra...
Aang restored her powers as well as giving her the knowledge of Energybending, I assume to reverse the wrong that Amon/Noatak caused as well as to help her in the future.
I think I read somewhere that they received the go ahead for production of season 2 and were approved for season 3 as well. I can't 100% confirm or pull up the source at this moment though.
The quality and voice acting are very top notch and I really look forward to seeing more of this series. It's odd that it's technically a kid show on nickelodeon though.

Thought it was a huge cop-out to give her bending back and "unlocking" the avatar state by spiritworld Aang.
And as far as I've been thinking with the "advanced" bending maybe Energy Bending is the Air equivalent to an advanced style. I mean, as far as canon goes Air is the element of the spirit. Iunno, Just my interpretation of it all.
Fire benders use the energy generated from friction (which does generate some heat) to cause a charge and then they redirect that charge. As to "controlling" lightning even Iro said you cant control it you can only guide the energy.
and by friction i meant vibration in the molecules in the air. But that would be me imposing real world physics on imaginary worlds, etc.
Anyone can redirect lightning, its a technique Iro created to defend against firebenders that knew how to use lightning. Iro taught Zuko and then Zuko taught Aang. You even catch Mako using the redirection stance in the power plant.
also they announced several days ago about how its official that there will be 4 complete books for LoK
ooooohhh...four )*'0'*(
so they arent going to stop at the avatars element in this series.
well the first season counts as book 1..so there will be 3 more seasons
Well yea, but if this ends the way the first one did they won't have a book that is the avatars natural element. They didn't have an Air book in TLA if i remember correctly.
Anyway, if it turns out to be that way or not....i cant wait for this just like i cant wait for any of my other shows starting again Q_Q
Heres more info, theres also a bunch of character concept pictures floating around and some animatics but I'm too lazy to upload everything to a sharing website so I'll just linkylink
in TLA we are told that bending was taught to the animals by the spirits and then the animals taught the first human benders. But, episode 7 onward says that The Lion Turtles taught humans the ability to bend a single element and that one human can only control one element. The only thing i can necessarily take as canon is the Rava part of this lore. I always assumed The Avatar didnt just appear out of nowhere but mustve been granted the other elements by some force (i originally assumed the lion turtles, since it was a lion turtle that granted Aang the ability to reconnect to his past lives.) It just rewrites a lot of things from the series that we've already been told.
They break their own new lore with how Vahtu can just fuse with Unelak (however you spell it). It took Rava atleast 3 merges and the power of harmonic conversion to completely fuse with Wan and ALL of Wans descendants. Then, Vahtu DESTROYS the links to the other avatars which shouldnt be possible as the only thing that can permanently seal away the cycle and connection of past lives is if the avatar dies in the avatar state (from the original series).Theres a lot of lore breaking in just those last seven episodes and i dont know if i can just be happy with better flashy effects if it doesnt retain the story! They recovered Rava, but what happens to The Avatar cycle? If The Avatar cant connect to any past lives but Korra, then how does the avatar gain access to the other ancestors to fulfill their duties?
I've waited so long for this show to arrive :o!!! I LOVED Avatar: The Last Airbender (not the movie, oh god what did they do...) and from the first two episodes I watched it seems to be a very well done sequel.
The first season/book is Air, which is perfect because the main character Korra is the complete opposite of Aang and is proficient in water. She also knows how to use fire and earth but struggles to understand how air even works. I love the character in this sequel, she is the complete opposite of Aang in every way really, and I look forward to watching more of it!
The Legend of Korra premiers on April 14th, and will have a total of 26 episodes. Book one will have a total of 12 episodes while book two will have a total of 14. You can watch the two premier episodes early if you really want to... ... ... ... ... but otherwise they will both premier on April 14th.
ABOUT LEGEND OF KORRA
Republic City is everything that Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko fought for when they ended the Hundred Year War. With balance restored to the four nations, benders and non-benders can live together in peace, in this thriving metropolitan area. But even the steampunk paradise of Republic City has its problems, as the next Avatar discovers. When Avatar Korra arrives in Republic City to master her airbending, she comes face to face with criminal bending gangs as well as members of a vocal anti-bending revolution. Before long, Korra's Avatar skills are put to the test when she encounters a group of Chi-blockers led by the charismatic and mysterious Amon, who threatens the city and all the benders in it. Despite the immense danger, Korra vows to fight the growing anti-bending revolution. But will she be able to stop Amon before he rises to power and makes his vision of a bending-free world a reality?
KORRA / AVATAR
Korra couldn't have less in common with Aang, the previous Avatar. A 17-year-old girl from the Southern Water Tribe, she is as hot-headed and eager as she is talented. When she runs away to Republic City, her stubbornness and impatience get in the way of her bending studies, but it is clear from the start that she is destined for greatness. Korra discovers many new things in Republic City - some amazing and some terrifying. Whether its honing her bending skills in the Pro-bending Arena, facing off with street thugs or facing an anti-bending rebellion, Korra learns that being the Avatar comes with many dangers and responsibilities. As if being a teenager wasn't hard enough on its own!
MAKO / FIREBENDER
A Firebender with a serious side, the handsome and brooding Mako has always taken care of his little brother, Bolin. Growing up on the streets has given him a hard edge, but Mako loves his brother and will do anything to protect them both. Intensely focused on getting their team through the Pro-bending tournament and winning the jackpot, Mako's tightly controlled world gets a little more chaotic when Korra enters the picture.
BOLIN / EARTHBENDER
No matter how intense things get around Republic City (and they do get intense), Bolin is always good for a laugh. Mako's younger brother and Pro-bending teammate, Bolin tends to be more laidback and likes to have a good time. Despite their tough childhood, Bolin always has a smile on his face and a lady on his arm. In fact, it was Bolin who was responsible for introducing Mako to Korra. But Bolin is no clown. When the time comes to buckle down and bend some earth, this tough contender can handle his business.
TENZIN / AIRBENDER
Tenzin and his wife Pema raise their two daughters, Jinora and Ikki, and son Meelo, on Air Temple Island. As Avatar Aang's son and an Airbender, Tenzin carries a great responsibility on his shoulders to continue the dream of his father to protect not only the next Avatar, but also Republic City. Generally very serious and calm, Tenzin's serene life on Air Temple Island is rocked when the impetuous Korra moves into his home to continue her airbending training. As Korra's teacher, Tenzin finds his patience tested time and again but he also realizes that while she has a lot to learn from him, he also has something to learn from her.
CHIEF LIN BEIFONG
Her mother Toph taught Avatar Aang how to earthbend, but Chief Lin Beifong doesn't feel any special affection for the new Avatar. In fact, this metal and earthbending police chief sees Korra's arrival as the biggest threat Republic City has faced in recent times. Korra's reckless ways are constantly leaving Lin Beifong's streets in ruin, and this chief is determined to push the Avatar out of her city.
AMON
Little is known about the mysterious leader of the anti-bending revolution. He wears a mask to conceal his face. He is a nimble, stealthy fighter who shows no fear even against the highest-level bender. His ultimate goal is to rid the world of bending.
NAGA
Korra's polar bear-dog is her loyal companion and main mode of transportation. Historically, this creature was feared and hunted by members of the Water Tribe. Korra is the only person ever to have tamed one. Naga is very protective of Korra, and has learned how to use her strength to help Korra out of perilous situations.
PABU
Bolin found this cute fire ferret scrounging for food on the street and rescued him. He's a mischievous little fellow, always getting into things he shouldn't. But Pabu has gotten Bolin out of plenty of sticky situations with his agility and sharp teeth, and more often, he's been Bolin's partner in crime while playing practical jokes on Mako.
