MGS is "tactical stealth espionage". Nothing generic like every other FPS clone.

It's hard to glean that from the trailers. For a series that so many people champion as "not another COD clone", their marketing department seems ok with advertising it that way.

I mean, it's probably the biggest thing the series is known for. That's like saying "well I didn't know there were puzzles in Zelda because the trailer showed Zelda shooting his bow."

I've heard that the story is great and the characters are well written. I'm just not a big fan of the shooter genre, so I never bothered to do any additional research on the series. I can't be the only one who saw trailers full of pyrotechnic porn and dismissed it.

I never gave the MSG series much attention, it just seemed like another cookie cutter shooter from the trailers. I might have to give them a look.

Also, Rooks, take a night off, we haven't had a good slapfight in ages.

Way off. Its a third person tactical stealth series. There are several missions where you don't even use a gun. The series has opened up a bit, giving the option to shoot more, but going loud is often the least desired option. It really is all about being undetected.

If you two want to slapfight over something this trivial, do it in PMs.
I'm quite sure I didn't try to provoke any fanboy with my first comment. I just stated my opinion and even hoped that those who buy the game enjoy it. I don't see how I could be put in the same category as the other guy whose tone was kinda combative.

People often challenge themselves to complete the game on the hardest difficulty, no kills, no alert modes triggered, the games always give you a choice, be a stealthy son of a ***, which the quick trigger take downs REALLY help with if it's exactly like Ground Zeroes (Peacewalker had a similar takedown system).

Alternatively if you are so inclined you can shoot your way through but generally speaking you won't have an endless supply of ammo, you could very easily be overwhelmed, MGS games have generally promoted stealth over being a madman with a gun.

I remember back in the 90's, I was a kid, almost a teen, and I came across Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil (the original), and Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation. All three games were way ahead of their times, they were evolutionary. While Final Fantasy and Resident Evil have strayed from what made them great, Metal Gear Solid took the basic premise from MGS for the Playstation, and gradually expanded on it with each game. You can essentially play the first MGS, and then play Ground Zeroes, and you won't find much difference in how Snake's controlled. Of course, it's much smoother in Ground Zeroes, but the AI is much more aware.

Back then (in the olden day), action scenes were limited, and you could not go first-person. Metal Gear Solid introduced many great characters, and villains, including one of the best enemies of all time, Psycho Mantis. Now .. as a kid, Psycho Mantis freaked me out, and anyone who has played the original PSX game (with no access to the internet), would tell you how freaky it was.

The franchise has had its ups and downs, but generally it has remained true to itself because of Hideo Kojima. MGS is not about shooting a bunch of people like COD, or any other first-person shooter, MGS is about stealth. Doing anything and everything to ensure you are not found is the whole point of the game. You are not meant to fight, but if you are caught, Snake does a great job of fighting with any weapons you can grab hold of in the field. Then you have the ability to interrogate soldiers, and experience their fear. As a teenager playing MGS2, I would spend countless hours playing around with soldiers; so much fun.

But then again, you forget that MGS is not just a stealth/shooting game, it's about the story as well. It's like a movie within a game. The story in MGS can be so complex and convoluted, you really need to have played them all (and done research) to piece together what happened. To some it's a turn-off, and instead of trying to listen, and appreciate the story Kojima tries to portray, they skip the audio parts and go right to the gameplay. I'm fine with that, but some fans don't realize that Metal Gear Solid is highly dependent on having a good story, and it never fails to impress me (except maybe MGS2 a little).

Anyone who has not played the series should start with Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation. Surprisingly, despite the blocky graphics of the characters, the gameplay holds up well. You will have a challenge trying to clear it for the first time on Normal difficulty. It's a series you will feel passionate about, after you begin to understand what it's all about. Metal Gear Solid I is a game I cleared on the hardest difficulty, something I rarely do with any game; the replay value was amazing. Metal Gear Solid V is going to be like a big love letter to the MGS fans from Kojima and his crew. It would be hard for anyone who has not appreciated the series so far, to fully understand the story and all the insider references.

When I saw the trailer, I saw a young boy who looked like Liquid Snake, and I heard the words "Les Enfants Terribles". To anyone unfamiliar, it's nothing but three words in french, but to me .. it's a huge part of my childhood. You can only appreciate the words by playing Metal Gear Solid (and perhaps MGS2) for the PSX. As you can tell, I am eagerly awaiting MGSV, and not just because I can stealth, or shoot people in the head from far away .. I want to know what happens when the twin snakes collide with Big Boss. And I cannot wait any longer.

I would love to see how the story of MGS2 would have unfolded if Kojima (or Konami) had not felt obliged to change it (or have it changed) due to the tension in middle east at the time and then 9/11 attack. As a result, the story of MGS4 would have been different too. First, they had to replace Liquid with Ocelot in the tanker. Then, they had to change the ending dramatically after 9/11 attack.

I know this is no more than a humble dream, but it would be amazing to have an MGS2 remake to play it the way it was initially designed. To make it connect to the MGS4 rationally, they could kill off Liquid at some point and given a brief hint at Ocelot's transformation in a traditional post-credits conversation.

Liquid Ocelot, while having an explanation in MGS2, felt so rushed and forced, at least to me. Learning how Liquid managed to not be affected (or survived) the foxdie would have been interesting and maybe the scene where Solid was handcuffed would have proceeded to a final duel between the twins instead of Ocelot running away with RAY... We can speculate about this endlessly, but one thing is certain that the whole series was still an amazing ride and hope that Konami won't ruin this amazing franchise...

Edit: I should drop this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B7yLQV70e0

Acid games and Portable Ops aren't canon anyway so don't worry too much about those :D There is also Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance which was initially claimed to be canon by some dudes in Kojima's team, but then Kojima himself stated that it was only an imagination of that studio of what would happen after MGS4 and had nothing to do with his own ideas.

I enjoyed MG Acid but it was a card based game and not Kojima's. Portable OPs was OK but also not Kojima's and you can tell by playing Peacewalker which is Kojima's and blows it away.

MGS after Kojima leaves.....

Nope. Peace Walker.

It was really bad compared to the rest from the main series.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion I suppose. I remember I felt Portable Ops was very average and I got Peacewalker more because I was invested in the series and it was phenomenal by comparison. I believe it was the first to introduce the new stealth mechanics seen in MGSV as well.

Same here! It was the first game I played on the hardest difficulty. I played on "Extreme" mode of the earliest release..no rations, no Life recovery after beating bosses, just max Life extension.

Peace Walker was very refreshing to play as 4 years had passed since the last Kojima MGS (4). It had that genuine MGS feel to it in terms of story telling and gameplay. It streamlined Portable Ops' controls (which I I couldn't bear to play and watched a walkthrough instead for the story) and brought back the fun & long radio conversations (something I missed since MGS3...4 just didn't have enough radio contacts).

Yeah, I vividly remember trying to beat Liquid on Extreme. I thought the boxing match was the hard part .. until I got to the very last part. Damn, I almost killed my controller, must have retried at least 30 times to get it right.

And I tried the same thing on MGS2. Managed to get all the extra goodies, cleared it on Extreme, and then I tried my luck with "European Extreme", which makes Extreme look like childs play. After retrying each boss dozens of times, I managed to get through the game up to Vamp. And then I got stuck.

I managed to get Vamp down to the last part of his health, but then he goes insane and NEVER stops for anything. You can dodge him forever, but hitting him is the hardest thing I ever tried to do in a MGS game. He doesn't act that way on other mode. After repeatedly trying it for days, I was never able to figure it out, and sadly never cleared MGS2 on European Extreme. There would have been a way to finish him, but I never figured it out.

Err what is that from? Is it a spoiler?

From what brief research I've done it's dialogue from mission 46? Whatever that is, sounds like a spoiler, seriously if it is take it down, the game isn't even officially released yet.
