One of the most fun Sega Genesis games out there. It's game play was simple, a run around 2D shoot em up game. It was great, that Gunstar Super Heroes remake wasn't as good unfortunately. That and it was a remake, not a sequel.
I would agree with Skies of Arcadia though.
Gunners Heaven (Rapid Reload in PAL) was the spiritual successor to Gunstar Heroes. Game companies use the term "spiritual successor" to describe a game as an unofficial sequel since they more often than not carry on popular game mechanics and elements from the old one into the new one. To this day, I'm still sore this one never made it to the US.
Looks more like Wild Arms lol.
This game is still one of my favorite Tactics games and was probably the first one I played. The PS1 version is pretty hard to find now but thankfully there is a vita downloadable version!
I still own this game for the PS. I liked the game but didn't like the leveling system. Limited fixed battles made it where your better off leveling your MC the most. Sadira is a beast and some of her quotes in battle made me lol. You're taking me from behind. I think the thing I liked the most about it was the awesome anime-style moves with cutscenes and cheesy dialogue Modern games like Fire Emblem don't really have that kind of stuff.
Working Design tends to put cheesy dialogue in their translation. While some people didn't like that I don't mind it. The best thing about them is how they package the games. Fantastic artwork on CD and lots of extra things that comes with most of their games. My favorite game genre is SRPG so any sequel made for a SRPG game is a good thing.
When I first played Fire Emblem. Weapons breaking annoyed the hell of out me but I got used to it eventually. I like Tear Ring Saga which is pretty much a Fire Emblem game. FE Path of Radiance is probably my favorite out of the all the FE games I have played.
Shining Force series is excellent. If you haven't played Shining Force III should check it out. I remember playing Shining Force when I was like 10 on my friend's Sega Channel and just loved it. I liked Shining Force 2 way better, but I'd say both 1 and 2 really got me into video games(even though I already was) and more specifically RPG's. I never did play 3 so I'll have to look into that.
Faxanadu (NES)
A lot of people hate this one, but I liked it. I actually liked this game. And just the other day, I was looking through this case I have of NES games, and found I had a complete copy of Faxandu in like mint condition. Shame it's not worth anything.

This was such an amazing game... would be hard to make a sequel though. A prequel would be best.

Was this really that good? I didn't hear favorable reviews so I didn't pick it up. (I have way too many games to play)
But if it is actually a good game maybe I should look into it again.

From what I read about Dust, one guy poured alot of time into making the game which is why it feels rushed at the end but boy does the game show its love. Definitely cosigning on the game being fluid, the battling is fun and very reminiscent of Muramasa: The Demon Blades.
Furryisms aside, it's a great game for what it is.

Not familiar with it at all, but if it's Furry-associated in ANY way I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a lot of hate from people just because, well, apparently after years of being ridiculed themselves, no one knows how to tear down people who are "different" like the geek community.

Yeah, I always just thought "Legend of Dragoon", but someone tried to correct otherwise earlier in the thread.
*shrug*

The game was one giant glorified demo for the PS2. My cousins were pissed when we beat the game in a single sitting.

I dunno that you'd call it a "hit", but a really good under the radar PS3 game: Folklore (aka FolksSoul in Japan), by the sadly defunct Game Republic. Folklore focused on Irish/Celtic mythology, so could have made for a fantastic series focusing on different cultures in sequels. Apparently Sony almost did approve a sequel on PSP or as a downloadable PS3 game, but it barely failed to get green lit based on the lackluster sales of the original.
I hesitate to say it because in reality I bet a sequel would have turned out terrible, but more Eternal Darkness that was as good as the original game would have been great.
Noticed a lot of people mentioned Lost Odyssey, and I LOVE the game but really think it's perfect as-is and series would almost just dilute that perfection.
I'm a bit surprised to see so many people with fond memories of Skies of Arcadia and (especially) Legend of Dragoon. SoA wasn't a bad title, but it fell squarely in the "forgettable also-ran" category. Legend of Dragoon, on the other hand, bordered on terrible. The combat mechanics weren't bad, but the heavy-handed linearity and the Wal-Mart High Fantasy® brand characters were atrocious. Don't even get me started on Edgy Goth Chick's transformation animation or the eleventy-bazillion stage final boss...
This guy knows what's up.

Of the two Legend games, I prefer Legaia to Dragoon.
I almost want to ignore Duel Saga all together.

What is Eternal Darkness? I've not looked deeply into it (I could, obviously, but want player feedback). I've heard it has Lovecraftian themes to it. Is this true?

VERY Lovecraftian, yes. I won't spoil too much but as a fan this is by far the best mythos-inspired video game I've ever played. Uttering the ancient words to cast spells is a really cool mechanic too, that fits oh so perfectly with the Lovecraft themes.
It's a third person action/adventure game, with sort of a less clunky "survival-horror" kind of control. Smoother than something like the Playstation Resident Evils. There's some action, but it's not an over the top twitch-style game.
The story setup is pretty clever too, it's structured with a single sort of hub-like present day area that moves the story along and leads you into many different chapters where you go to past generations and settings.
Might be my favorite game on the Gamecube, it's totally worth checking out and is the reason a lot of people clamored for a sequel for so long and held out hope that Silicon Knights and/or their head guy (Dennis Dyack) would make a sequel or spiritual sequel. Too Human on 360 was pretty badly received though, and a failed Kickstarter a couple years back seems to signify that dream may be dead.

What are you talking about? Legaia 2 was great! The soundtrack was amazing with Sakimoto and Matsuda both working on it. The combat was much better, and there was a ***ton of extra stuff to do in the game. I don't understand why it gets a bad rap. In fact, I've been considering replaying it soon as I haven't played it in years.

Simple topic. Fire off a game or two that was just a single title that you have always wished would have become a franchise.
I'll start. The most obvious one that many people will likely repeat is Legend of Dragoon. However, one that I liked even more and will always hold out hope for is Skies of Arcadia.
For anyone that doesn't know, Skies is a one hit wonder RPG from the Dreamcast that sports a sky pirate theme and had some nice battle mechanics that involved changing your group's weapon element with Moonstones. It also featured epic sky pirate airship battles that were a lot of fun and a system of recruiting people to live in your town, plying their particular trade to help in the town's growth. This recruitment also served as a way to build up a big attack that the crewmen would join in on, attacking the enemy or healing and/or buffing your party.
Skies received an updated release for the GameCube, but no sequel ever happened, much to many fans' disappointment. One fan even wrote a letter to Sega about the game has achieved cult status. The fan actually received a replay directly from Sega's president with his excuse as to why they never made a sequel. Odd that Skies was big with fans long before the reasons in his reply even existed.

Quote: Thank you for taking the time to write to us. Unfortunately, there are currently no plans to release a sequel for Eternal Arcadia (Japanese name for Skies of Arcadia). To be honest, I’m not sure if we even deserve to be in the games business.
Our reputation has taken quite a dive in recent years. We’re still reeling from the repercussions of releasing the 15th Anniversary Sonic the Hedgehog game (commonly known as Sonic 2006). That is forever a mark on our formerly good name.
As a publisher, we can not seem to get our act in order. A release in the United States known as Aliens: Colonial Marines was completely botched by its developer Gearbox and was critically panned. We did absolutely nothing in response. We were just taken advantage of.
Even if we did release an Eternal Arcadia sequel, we can not ensure that the quality would be to your liking. The long-awaited sequel to NiGHTS was also met with negative reviews. How many more people can we afford to let down? I say, none.
There is a reason we are not making Valkyria of the Battlefield 4 (Japanese name for Valkyria Chronicles), we would just mess it up. I was honestly surprised that we could still make a new series that was actually good. Today, I still use this series as justification for keeping our games division alive which is why I can not afford a series decline like Sonic the Hedgehog.
We are running on nostalgia at this point. Sonic Generations used up all the nostalgia we could possibly wring out of the Sonic series and now we are creatively bankrupt. The Sonic & Sega Racing series uses a similar tactic by using characters like Vyse and Alex Kidd to foster nostalgic thoughts.
Please do not get your hopes up for an Eternal Arcadia sequel. Just play the Valkyria of the Battlefield series as Vyse appears in it as a playable character. It may not be the same, but at least you will be playing a good game.
Sincerely,
Satomi Hajime
