The Story
The year 842 is
the beginning of the end.
In an act of unprovoked aggression, the Militesi Empire invaded the Dominion of Rubrum. Imperial dreadnoughts swarmed the skies, assailing the unsuspecting countryside under the banner of the White Tiger. From amidst the flames of the besieged dominion, the Vermilion Bird rose in defiance, her crystal granting magic and mighty eidolons that her disciples might cast out the technologically advanced aggressors.
Thrust into the tumult of war, the fate of the world and its four crystals now rests on the shoulders of fourteen brave, young warriors.
Lore of Orience
THE CRYSTALS YIELDED FOUR GOVERNING FORCES
– MAGIC, WEAPONS, SHIELD, DRAGONS –
TO THE PEOPLE OF ORIENCE
Since the dawn of eternity, four lights of hope have shone upon the world.
Men flock to these lights, around which they build four peristylia.
Each peristylium becomes their faith and society, the path upon which they are set.
The Vermilion Bird – wings of fire to lift the heart.
The White Tiger – steely arms by which to seize knowledge.
The Azure Dragon – unclouded eyes that see all beneath the sky.
The Black Tortoise – a rigid shield and a well-guarded blade.
But when nine and nine meets nine,
Tempus Finis shall be willed upon them.
For without the Agito, their world—called Orience–
must persist in its spiral.
In the land of Orience, it is said that “when Tempus Finis arrives, the crystal will guide Agito, those who will balance the world.”
Many interpret this as “saviors, called Agito, will emerge when the catastrophe, referred to as Finis, befalls this world.”

That's because they're military students.
This isn't a new Final Fantasy concept. :|

FF8 had lots of things I didn't like, but on the majority it was a win.
Is it just me, or is Type 0 getting better hype than 15?

Is it just me, or is Type 0 getting better hype than 15?I am in the group of FFVIII-lovers. Yeah, Squall was kinda depressing most of the game but it made the moment when he realized he gave a ***about Rinoa that much more powerful... Feels on Ragnarok. Also, FFVIII had a tendency to explain, in fairly good detail, how physics of the game world worked.
Type-0 is getting a bit of hype, I think, because it was never promised to us as FFXV, an installment of the main series, was. I could also assume it is due to the variety of characters, weapon types, and class archetypes represented as opposed to four guys.
It's gotten to the point that all the best "Final Fantasy" games are spin-offs. Hell even FFIX, which Kalila and I would both deem a masterpiece, was intended to be a spin-off and that was prior to the Enix acquisition of SquareSoft. Even Bravely Default, which was a spin-off so distant that it didn't even bear the Final Fantasy title, was a great game but a play through makes it obvious what kind of game it is.
Speaking of Bravely Default, if you haven't yet played it, I highly recommend it.

Don't get me wrong, I loved ff8, and I don't expect perfection. I just feel I need to take the good with the bad, long as the good out weighs.

true but at least 8s had more originality to it xD ...Only because it did it first.
Honestly, making anything original story/theme/lore-wise at this point is going to be obscenely difficult to do.
Originality is going to have to come from game play mechanics and HOW the story is told. That's exactly what the Souls series did and excelled at. It's what the original four Silent Hill games did and excelled at.

It's what the original four Silent Hill games did and excelled at. That and the fact that games nowadays seem to put graphics before story is why Final Fantasy kinda died for me after XII. We have these great graphics, but stunted worlds. There are no world maps anymore and everything is linear, this started with FFX and continued in FFXIII. FFXII took an MMO approach with a seemingly cell-based world, much like Oblivion and Skyrim but with less freedom, if Final Fantasy could get back to that I'd probably find myself back in love with the series. I'd even take a drop from FFXV to Skyrim graphics.
To me, Final Fantasy is like a good book; the graphics aren't what matters, it's the story and here lately Final Fantasy has been all Graphics with watered down story.

I still prefer 8, to any of the ***they've put out in the past decade.

I miss the days of no voice acting, no one had an annoying voice that made me want to strangle everyone at SE
By Kalila 2014-12-27 02:32:39
Voice acting can help a game a great deal, but at the same time it can hurt it if the voice doesn't fit the character(s). That's where most JRPGs go wrong I feel.

If it doesn't get a huge overhaul many of the people here will be disappointed. Only Kalila may like it if it reminds her of Dark Souls during the first playthrough.
It's not bad, but the PSP version doesn't deserve any type of hype.
