I'm looking for a good VPN software to download on my windows laptop. For some reason, FFXIAH.com sometimes is blocked by my employer's wifi network firewall, due to it being considered a "social media" site. I want to still be able to view this page on my laptop without using my phone.

Does anyone know of any good software (that is not a paid service for full functionality) that can accomplish this? It is only needed for just a few moments out of the week, so its not a fulltime VPN. Any advice would be appreciated.

If your employer has put restrictions in place you should honour their wishes.

As someone who works in IT, people trying to bypass our restrictions piss us off no end.

I am using hotspot shield. It opens up a browser page to show up some ads though. I am using firefox as my main browser and it opens the page on IE so I just leave it minimized and ignore it, so it isn't really annoying.

LOL well in that case here is a way to get around all of IT just cause i don't like IT bully's!

http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx

you can set it up to access many computers, as long as the power is on to that system setup you can gain access anytime.

Free for anyone that uses it for personal use. So screw the IT bully's that love to think they can control everything!

Have fun doing what ever you want and they never know. i wouldn't play the game through it. its to slow.

Why the hell are you putting a private device on a closed company network in the first place?

If you are installing software ona company laptop to circumvent the ccorporate firewall/usage policy, you might as well start looking for a new job.

then don't put in restrictions that don't make sense, or are archaic and obsolete.

There are restrictions to enforce and for good reason, like not allowing local admin rights on corporate devices (even though it pisses people off, it's a great policy), but blocking social media is archaic and if you have employees that would abuse it, then you need to rethink your priorities and who you have employeed in the first place.

Good, Free and VPN don't go well together, sorry.
yeah, it's a shame really, same with great network firewalls.

He never said it was a closed network, it's quite possibly the work's public wifi, that's still under some restrictions, even some companies allow private devices on the wifi, even though it's a bad policy.

There's software you can use that you don't have to install however, teamviewer portable is one of these.

Could just rent a small server for dirt cheap and remote in and use it.

I use to have access to one for free from an old friend of a friend from college, but I haven't heard from either of them in years, the owner much longer, and he hasn't updated the software in forever. Technically I still have access to it, but to setup a VPN, those features are broken.

I had to get an account with FatCow for webhosting just because the php version was so old lol, but that expires December something.

All my domains are good until May and still using the Registrar that Scragg recommended, lol.

But ultimately renting a server might be the way to go, hmmm...

There's some free services that a basic server for that may just be under the limit, like Amazon's aws.

I actually haven't fiddled with it, but it's worth a look.

Completely free, no limit, works well. Eventually there will be a cost, but we don't know when.

It's not a company laptop. It's my personal one. I'm not viewing porn our anything that would really get me fired, I just wanted to view ffxiah blogs when I'm at lunch. For some reason this website flags as social media. But yet I can use websites that are truly social media. But you're probably right.

The wifi allows for guests to use it, but it just blocks stupid websites. Can still use espn forums though.

Then yeah, I'd just teamviewer in to your home computer, or you could go through the issue of using a vpn, either one.

I use teamviewer all the time. Works wonders and allows me to fix my parent's computer every week when they download and install spyware/adware instead of driving the 15 miles to them.

Why don't you just remove their local admin rights, I mean how often do they actually need to install stuff?

They complain when they are limited from installing things.

I think I saw that a few weeks ago. Have you personally used it?

EDIT: Never mind, just saw where it says it gives you IPs from Sweden only. Need one that gives U.S. IPs.

Frootvpn.

Been looking at reviews and anything else on it for the last hour or 2 so, here's what I've come to realize about this vpn.

It's free, based out of Sweden, quite fast, and they keep no logs.

It was promoted first on TPB as an ad. When TPB was asked about it, they had no clue it was there and who did it. They assume someone from TPB plugged it from someone they know but that person still hasn't come forward, if they ever will.

When FrootVPN is contacted, they only send the same exact block of text to whatever question;

Quote:
Thank you for your request. Since it is a new launch of FrootVPN, we decided to keep it free as long as we are able to run it. Resources are enough to keep it running for free at least a few months more, but we might rethink this very soon. Even if FrootVPN were to charge our users, it would be very low as compared to other providers out in the market. The people behind FrootVPN support freedom of speech and want the Internetz to be a uncensored place =)

My gut is saying; Too good to be true. Stay away from it.

No way, they totally are bros!

Reminded me of an investing ponzi scheme I looked into recently. Guy was going around posing as different people promoting his own product apparently. As well as a lot of other sketchy stuff. Good thing there arn't people like that on the windower team/etc
